  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump has bypassed Congress so often, they seem totally unnecessary in the scheme of things. They, along with the Supreme Court, rubber-stamp all his foolish demands because they're afraid he will primary them. He could care less about NATO because he wants to end NATO. You seem to think that his rantings and ravings are just bluffs. They are not. What are we arguing about?
no arguing, just disagreeing

1) There are very, very people in this world who fail to understand that Trump often bluffs. His policies are called TACO for good reason.

2) Trump cannot end NATO. And no, Supreme Court would not rubber stamp such action. BTW, SCOTUS has often decided against Trump.

3) Some Republicans were willing to vote against Trump with regard to arresting a criminal in Venezuela. The vote was 50-50 in the Senate. The Senate would easily vote against pulling out of NATO again and against any invasion of Greenland. And, yes, the Courts would uphold the Senate.

4) Clearly, you think very little of the US military. They would not invade a NATO country without authorization from Congress. Invading a NATO country is a clear act of war. As was the case with regard to Viet Nam and Iraq, Congress would take a vote on an invasion of Greenland.

...given trump hallucinated a conversation with world leaders yesterday over drug prices...I really don't have much faith his supposed claim of the deal with greenland to be true. I don't get why anyone believes a thing the guy says.

I know what TACO means. SCOTUS has not "often" decided against Trump. An analyst on tv last week quoted the number of times SCOTUS had agreed with Trump and it is approximately 80% of the time. So, yes, they rubber-stamp his nonsense. I served in the miliitary and unless you served, and unless things have drastically changed, service people generally go along with orders given. Clearly, you think more of Congress than most people. The only thing you got right is yes, Trump does bluff... but his bluffs usually turn into action unless and until something hinders his bluffs (the stock market, incredibly bad polls, etc.). He is in competition with Russia and China and wants a society modeled after his vision of "the strong man." There was a war powers resolution recently that would have forced Trump to seek Congressional approval for further action in Venezuelan and the Senate blocked it. So he is free to do whatever he wants. Last year's action by the Supreme Court blessing him the ability to do whatever he wanted as president, sealed the deal. He has been pushing the boundaries of that ruling ever since. If you honestly think he won't go hog-wild and do whatever he is big enough to do, you are sadly mistaken.

I'm confused. You speak as if there are no mining companies or US economic interests already present in Greenland's mining.

It is unclear what Trump wants, perhaps ownership of certain land, perhaps special treatment with regard to regulation and licensing, perhaps first dibs on the purchase any future production.
EXACTLY!

As this BRILLIANT analysis says:

"He did what he always does when backed into a corner - he declared victory."

But what did he actually achieve? What was this victory?
"A framework of a future deal" that:-
1. Will NOT impose the tariffs he was bluffing.
2. Will NOT take ownership of Greenland because (in Trump's weasel words) - "It's complex."
3. Will NOT add anything new, as the USA ALREADY had military alliances and co-operation under NATO. America ALREADY has a base right-smack bang next to Greenland. Greenland has ALREADY been begging for someone to come and develop their rare-earth mines.
If anyone insists that all this inflammatory rhetoric that makes NATO look weak and divided actually achieved something for America, then I'll ask them a simple question. Have they got Stockholm Syndrome?

This is what actually happened.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared international law had 'ruptured.'
We used to turn a blind eye every time America hypocritically broke the old rules based system, as long as America did not break those rules against us. Or my paraphrase is "The enemy of my enemy is my friend, until they turn on me."

Then Carney said, "If you are not at the table, you are on the menu."

Again - Carney's speech will be analysed for decades. Because he simply said what everyone already knew, but were too afraid to act on.
This time, Trump has gone too far. This time, Carney called it out on the world stage - and Europe backed him and their own ideals by moving troops into Greenland.

This time, Europe said enough was enough.

And so Trump 'declared victory.'
But inside, he's fuming!

Except he backed down, stopped talking about invading Greenland, and 'declared victory' even though when pressed he expands (with his weasel words) that they had a 'new framework'. But again, when pressed.... there's nothing new here. America has the same military and economic relationship with Greenland that they had before. Exactly the same.

Trump. Got. Nothing!

But why do Americans let him act like this?

He is making NATO look weak.

That signals to Putin and Xi Jinping that they can do whatever they want.

Trump attacking Venezuela and declaring the America's his 'backyard' gives Russia and China permission to do the same.

Now Trump threatens to invade a NATO ally because "he wants it".

What on earth? Isn't it time for the 25th - the guy is clearly unbalanced.

His malignant NPD cannot be cured. He should be axed.

I am telling you he is TOXIC but it will take Republicans to do the intervention. Unless the midterms change the balance of power.

I guess the broader Republican party is too frightened to take action. Or too ignorant? Do they not get the sheer economic consequences of this, let alone if the NATO alliance should really fall apart?

Europe have an "economic bazooka." It would really hurt Silicon Valley.

Do you think trump will invade?
Hello. I think there is a way around the underlying premise. Trump says he wants Greenland to stop China and Russia taking Greenland, because they're the enemy. Perhaps people in the West need to change their mindset. If China is the enemy, maybe consumers need to stop buying Chinese goods, electronics and the like. Without people buying their goods China is a bloated, beached whale. If Russia is the enemy, then support Ukraine. They're fighting for their lives against Russia and so far are holding their ground. There are practical steps everyone can take. Kind Regards.

Regardless of that, if China is the enemy we in the West should perhaps consider not supporting their economy. Rather than seizing Greenland, cut off the money. God Bless You :)

We’re already dependent on China, exiting trade with them would prove “difficult”.

Trump has alienated the EU, made NATO a laughing stock, and threatened to invade friends.

Before Trump, America was like the Big Brother that used to help us all survive the bullies in the playground.

But then that Big Brother turned mean, and started threatening to bash us up while stealing our lunch money!
Big Brother is unstable. This instability will make him sick, and weaker.

Everyone has turned to the Little Brother, China, for protection from the unstable Big Brother.
Little Brother trades favours, and protects our lunch money.

Soon it will be Little Brother's turn to rule the playground.
We just don't trust the Big Brother any more. He's too unstable.

Besides, a coalition of us little guys stood up to him recently - and he's all hot air.
We just don't believe him any more. He's a joke!

Big bullies come and go. We've seen it before. This guy is on the way out. It's time.
