  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is so frustrating. The answer is simple. The USA talks to Greenland about increasing their military bases there. Greenland has agreed to that but they do not want to become citizens of the USA. So set up the bases and forget about taking over their territory. (An apology for suggesting it, in the first place, might be in order, but the Greenlanders probably would be generous enough to overlook that, if it is not forthcoming.)

Meanwhile it might be time for the 25th.

Trump has been offered plenty of off ramps to his escalation. He's not interested.

You know what I will definitely NOT do if you send me a PM? I won't post it in the general forum. Out of common courtesy. I'd expect the same courtesy from you and I'd suggest that it would be automatically forthcoming.

Trump? Well, Trump and common courtesy don't really go together, now do they.
I have never sent you a pm.

If America doesn't control access to the shipping lanes in the Arctic Ocean aroundGreenland, then Russia and China most surely shall.

This is both a false dichotomy and a claim not support by evidence.

Which option is the most preferable one?

Neither.

Principles of free navigation under international maritime law are the most preferable one. Specifically, articles 24, 42 and 87 of the Convention on the Law of the Sea.

If the US had removed its noodle from its posterior in the 1980s (or 1990s, or 2000s) and actually ratified the convention (which is helped draft and has already signed), then it would have a legal leg to stand on.

As it stands, the US' wishy-washy stance of the convention (accepting it as part of international law but not ratifying it) undercuts its position on maritime law.

Is that meant to avoid addressing Trump's complete lack of political courtesy?
I don't believe that he lacks any political courtesy at all.

Not relevant at all. That was 10 years ago.
Cruz showed himself to be a spineless sycophant 10 years ago - I've seen nothing to suggest that he's changed.

Indeed - I've made no secret of my contempt for the man. Not sure why you think his words would carry any weight.

What you believe runs counter to the reality that the rest of us see. It runs counter to the evidence. It's not a case of belief anymore with this guy. It's whether you accept the facts or not.

America has bought large amounts of land in our history. This ain't nothing new. If America doesn't control access to the shipping lanes in the Arctic Ocean aroundGreenland, then Russia and China most surely shall. Which option is the most preferable one?

NATO is the key to stopping a Russian naval breakout in the North Atlantic providing land anchors on either side of the gap and naval assets like SSNs in it. If the USA annexes Greenland then they open up the policing of the ship lanes and allow SSBNs with Tsunami inducing nukes through the gap. In a war you have no defence against a tidal wave on the East coast of the USA. Buying Greenland splits NATO and makes the USA more vulnerable not less. You are supporting a policy that is a clear and present danger to the security of your nation.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum today:

...excerpts ( I agree 100%....we are seeing a complete disruption in the rules-based order that has been in place since the end of WW2):

“I will talk today about the breaking of the world order, the end of a pleasant fiction and the beginning of a brutal reality where the geopolitics of the great powers is not subject to any constraint,”

“Every day we are reminded that we live in an era of great power rivalry,” he said. “That the rules-based order is fading. That the strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.”

He added, “Let me be direct: We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.”

“The middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, we’re are on the menu,” he said. “Great powers can afford now to go it alone.”

What options are you talking about for heaven's sake? Control access all you want. Greenland (and Denmark) will be grateful for it. And if you need more and/or larger bases in Greenland then just ask nicely. They'll literally give them to you! They'll welcome the influx of money. You'll be welcomed with open arms.

But, no. Trump is psychologically unable to ask nicely. He needs to threaten. He needs to demand. He needs to play what he thinks is the strong man. Except we all see him for what he is.
Not quite true. He's happy to ask nicely when he sees someone as an equal, but for nations, one needs to at least have nukes for that.
