I don’t even know what color Larnie is but it doesn’t really matter to the broader point that we are in a police state, all of us. Whites and browns. Supporters of the administration and non.

I’m a white woman but not near Minnesota. However, I am in an area that’s seeing increased ICE presence.

When I leave my house I have a lanyard with a whistle, a container with two days of meds, and a personal alarm. I wear it everywhere. Around work. When I shop. When I jog. If I see ICE, I don’t care where I am… My job, a grocery store, on a sidewalk, I pull the tab on my personal alarm and blow my whistle and film everything until they leave.

If I get arrested, I get arrested. My job will likely not hold it against me and I’m confident when this insanity passes, we will have our records expunged like the J6 mob. However, even if that wasn’t the case, I’d still do it. I carry none of my IDs because I want to make it as difficult as possible for them. Every minute they spend dealing with me is a minute they’re not getting somebody else.

My family was part of the German resistance during WWII. My grandfather fled Germany and was granted asylum because his family was caught hiding Jews. This is my family’s legacy and my family didn’t raise their daughter/granddaughter/ancestor to not stand up against this.

In no reality, even in 2016 or 2020, did I think this would be my daily reality. I worry for my mom, first born American to German parents. I worry for my sons, I worry they’ll be drafted or compelled to a stupid, pointless war or worse by their government. These are fears I never had before and never thought I’d have.

It’s whackers bonkers.

Perhaps it’s because I’m more aware of what’s going on or live in an area with a higher presence or because I’m listening to the scared “brown people” in my area who are being taken or fear being taken or have seen ICE try to enter a homeless shelter where I volunteer to “use the bathroom” but really just come for the people who are there or watched the “brown people” hide in the walk in fridge of my son’s work because ICE just descended to harass people just trying to eat.

Or maybe my legacy of growing up listening to the stories of my family taken by SS, learning everything I could (academically and anecdotally through family who lived it) about the internal cannibalization of a nation carried out by the fascist regime, seeing journals and diaries and paperwork and documentation and “free to pass” patches has made me especially aware of the actions that are consistent with that government.

Who knows.
