Trump threatens 25% tariff on European allies until Denmark sells Greenland to US

Donald Trump threatened a 25% tariff on a slew of European countries including Denmark, Germany, France and the UK – until the US is allowed to purchase Greenland, in an extraordinary escalation of the president’s bid to claim the autonomous Danish territory.

In a lengthy post on Saturday on Truth Social, Trump said he would impose a 10% tariff on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland beginning 1 February, “on any and all goods sent to the United States of America”.

He said the tariff will increase to 25% on 1 June. “This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump said.

Considering the amount of US bases in operation in other NATO countries, which serve as important logistical and strategic hubs, I'd say that the USA needs "those allies", yes.

For example, the Ramstein base in germany is a signal hub for any drone operations in the middle east.

Why do we need drones at Ramstein? We can save some money by not having bases there, and that's how I feel: why protect someone unwilling to protect themselves? common sense, notice Trump is working on protecting the Western Hemisphere. Y'all have a high opinion of yourselves, thinking we need you.

Why would Trump want to protect countries where their leaders resist him at every turn? When Trump asked for more spending on NATO during his first term yall stuck your noses up at him. What did the EU spend all its money on (24 years)? Definitely not the defense of your own country, as shown by the Ukraine war.

I have this view since 2006 when 2% benchmark was set.

I remember when the Twin towers came down. I was at work outside and we were located on an flight path for our local airport and remember how quite it was. We later found out from the lunch truck what had happened. We stood with you side by side and Candada fought and bled for your country.

Fact is, Greenland happens to be positioned in a place that is perfect for the East end of a missile defense dome, that can protect an entire continent against Russian aggression.
