  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

....the U.S. has a long history of supplying military supplies to the Nigerian government:

January, 2025. U.S. State Deparment:

For more than 50 years, the United States and Nigeria have enjoyed a strong security partnership and friendship. The U.S.-Nigeria relationship is among the most important in sub-Saharan Africa, given Nigeria’s status as Africa’s most populous country, largest economy, and our shared democratic values. The United States works closely with Nigeria, both bilaterally and through regional and multilateral fora like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/ISIS, and the African Union. Our joint efforts are focused on increasing cooperation on maritime and border security, military professionalization, counterterrorism efforts against Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa, defense trade, and strengthening governance of the security sector.

The op's article is very light on details....

So I really don't have an opinion on this specific shipment of military supplies....either way.

OK, supporting allies that request help is anathema to US so-called liberals. I get it!

I see...this is nothing more than a bait thread for "liberals"?

have a nice day.

I do.

An ally requested military supplies per a treaty agreement.

I support providing those supplies. I do NOT have the need or expertise to judge every provision of arms pursuant to our treaty arrangements. I do understand that others differ.

If you think so, what's so hard about saying fighting terrorism is a good thing unless you have sympathy towards Boko Haram? Or are you trapped by ideology or hate for Trump that you can't say anything positive?

Nor do you need to have expertise. Common sense.

....or maybe, I would like to understand the history of US military aid to Nigeria before offering an opinion? I'm not familiar with US & Nigerian relations. And as I already noted, the aid program has been occuring across administrations.

Why are you making this a referendum on Trump when the described aid is nothing new?

Big Bird is off the air! Oh, my goodness! Even AI knows that's not true
AI doesn't "know" anything. It is not sentient [yet].
Here’s what’s actually going on:

Sesame Street is still being produced and shown.

New episodes of Sesame Street are scheduled to air on PBS and PBS Kids, and they’ll also be available to stream on Netflix starting with new seasons in 2025 and beyond, after Warner Bros./Max stopped airing new episodes on their services.
That's nice for those who can afford Netflix.
Big Bird is still part of the show
  • Big Bird remains a central character in Sesame Street as part of the ongoing series; the character itself hasn’t been discontinued or “taken off the air.”

Confusion from funding and platform changes
  • Recent cuts to federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting may affect some local PBS stations’ operations, which has fueled rumors about shows being canceled. But Sesame Street itself still has distribution through PBS and Netflix.
More AI:
AI Overview
Big Bird's Hilarious Moment at GalaxyCon | TikTok
Big Bird isn't completely off the air, but Sesame Street faced significant disruption with HBO not renewing its deal for new episodes in late 2024, leading to uncertainty and budget concerns, while the beloved character's original puppeteer, Caroll Spinney, retired in 2018, though new performers took over. Recent political moves to defund public broadcasting (PBS) also threatened the show's future on traditional TV, sparking fears for Big Bird's continued presence, despite ongoing negotiations for new streaming homes like Netflix or Amazon.
Key Points & Timeline:
  • 2018: Caroll Spinney, the original voice and puppeteer for Big Bird since 1969, announced his retirement, passing the torch to new performers.
  • 2024: HBO decided not to renew its streaming deal for new Sesame Street episodes, shifting focus to older content on Max and creating concern for the show's future home.
  • 2025: Political efforts to cut funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which supports PBS, led to more fears about Big Bird being "defunded".
  • Present: Sesame Street remains in discussions with other major platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video for new episodes, while older episodes still air on PBS.
In essence, while Big Bird himself is still present with new performers, the Sesame Street series has faced major shifts in its production and distribution, leading to a period of uncertainty for the beloved character's platform.
IMHO - if a person can't get the story about a 6 and a half foot chicken correct - I really cannot take anything they say seriously.
8 and a half foot tall bird, not six and a half foot chicken - get that correct?

I had to Google the history to give my opinion.
What are the "merits" of this action?
Aid has been going on for a long time, and you ask what the merits are? You can Google how much Biden sent to Nigeria, but the merits of supplying Nigeria to fight terrorism are a good thing in my book.
