  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Venezuelans hopeful of regime change dismayed as government appears to remain the same

Political reality is settling in for Venezuela as the regime once led by deposed President Nicolás Maduro tightens its hold on the country.

the government is cracking down on any new signs of dissent, arresting people they said celebrated Maduro’s capture by the United States military. The country’s security and intelligence apparatus is out in force, with masked paramilitary “colectivos” — armed civilians who support the government — roaming the streets on motorcycles, and military intelligence agents in civilian clothes circulating in vans with an official insignia and setting up roadblocks.

“A dangerous precedent is being created between the United States and Latin America,” Michelle said. “We realize that we are just another piece on the board in the struggle between powers, for whom the future of the Venezuelan people lacks relevance compared to the importance of valuable resources, which are worth more than life itself.”

Whether or not “freedom” is about to sweep across Venezuela, the old regime is intent on projecting continuity. A striking symbol of this was when Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as president and the country’s leadership marched shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the National Assembly on Monday.

....echos back to the U.S. supporting right wing dictators to keep communism contained.....except in this case, Trump is working with a bonified "Chavista", whose own father was executed after he kidnapped a western business man. Interesting times in Latin America....

I move to henceforth call it the Rodriguez regime.

Nothing else has changed, naturally.

Secretary of State Rubio describes the next steps in helping the Venezuelans.

....Rubio has said a lot of things. Let's see what actually happens in the months to come. In the meantime, there are numerous reports of increased government repression by roaming militias who report to the Minister of Interior.....

Because they wanted someone to bring him to the US (or some other US ally who would extradite him) so that he could be arrested legally.
You and I both know that was not going to happen. Maduro knew that he was absolutely safe from extradition or from anyone else bringing him to the USA.

You and I know that wasn't going to happen.

Not for lack of trying, even if it was by chuckleheads.

But if you're patient enough, it might happen. It happened to Duterte. Not delivered to us, but to the ICC.

Ain't it a shame when leaders use their position of power to escape accountability for their crimes?

-- A2SG, you know, the kinds of things dictators are wont to do....

No. She is 100% incorrect.
Only 100%? Those are rookie numbers. We need these bumped up to 600% like Trumps drug price reductions. ^_^

Oh, I fully agree that anyone, dictator or otherwise, should be held accountable for any crimes they can be proven to have committed, and the act of assuming power should not be used as a get out of jail free card.

-- A2SG, but we all know that happens sometimes.....

No. She is 100% incorrect.

1. "Trump though Venezuela's oil was a quick smash-and-grab."
Hard to know what he was thinking when he ordeded the military to snatch a sitting President. The day after alll, however, all he could gush about was oil.

2. "Turns out it's rusted refinery, guarded by militias, sitting on a political fault line, with a price tag the sized of a small war. Oil companies took one look and said, "Call us in 30 years." Assuming "refinery" refers to Venezuela's oil infrastructure overall, this is certainly a true statement. Once more, the CEO of Exxon-Mobil reminded Trump that Exxon had it's assets expropriated - twice. Trump even joked it was a nice tax write off. [Trump later noted Exxon would not be "invited" to his oil party]. And militias guarding the oil fields? If they are not today, they will be....especially if American military and/or private security dudes are brought in for guard duty.

3. "Nothing like learning that "taking the oil" costs money, expertise, and reality."
Who needs "experts?" After all, they may have noted that today's global market price for heavy crude is too low to make Venezuelan crude an attractive investment.

ah, but reality says something different:

January 3, 2026
• Trump said the U.S. will be strongly involved in rebuilding Venezuela’s deteriorating oil infrastructure and that American companies would take a lead in that effort following the capture of Nicolás Maduro.

January 7, 2026
• U.S. officials under Trump’s administration said the U.S. aims to control Venezuela’s oil sales and rebuild its oil sector, tying it to broader economic stabilization.

January 8, 2026
• In an interview with The New York Times, Trump said U.S. oversight of Venezuela will last for years and emphasized plans to rebuilt the country in a profitable way by extracting and marketing Venezuelan oil.

January 9, 2026
• At a White House meeting with oil executives, Trump explicitly stated that American companies will have the opportunity to rebuild Venezuela’s “rotting” energy infrastructure and eventually raise oil production to historic levels — without specifying subsidies (but offering assurances).
• At the same meeting, Trump assured executives of “total safety” if they invest in the Venezuelan oil industry and pushed for about $100 billion in investment.

January 11–12, 2026
• After the January 9 meeting, Trump publicly said he was “inclined” to keep ExxonMobil out of the Venezuela plan because he disliked the company’s response, reiterating his push to involve U.S. energy firms in rebuilding efforts.
2. "Turns out it's rusted refinery, guarded by militias, sitting on a political fault line, with a price tag the sized of a small war. Oil companies took one look and said, "Call us in 30 years." 30 years? my how time flies!

Trump meets with US oil executives to address Venezuelan access

The seizure comes as the Trump administration works to determine how to make the most of Venezuela’s oil. President Trump’s overall goal is to get oil executives to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in restoring Venezuela’s aging oil infrastructure.
Trump, as he opened the meeting with oil industry executives, sought to assure them that they need not be skeptical of quickly investing in and, in some cases, returning to the South American country with a history of state asset seizures as well as ongoing U.S. sanctions and the current political uncertainty.
They are lining up wanting a piece.
The White House said it invited oil executives from 17 companies, including Chevron, which still operates in Venezuela, as well as ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips, which both had oil projects in the country that were lost as part of a 2007 nationalization of private businesses under Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez.
