  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok you made your views known. Now we know where you stand. Trumps a Nazi and fascist. Same old poisonous narratives that caused all the violence.
Yeah, we forced ICE to gun down that poor woman in Minnesota or the other to people who were shot in Portland last night. We forced the Navy to kill those two smugglers in the wreckage of their boat. Christians like you cheered--you should thank us for offering you to the opportunity.for such righteous self-satisfaction.

Nazi was not said, except by you (and JD Vance).
Love him or hate him Donald Trump is the very touchstone of violence in the USA for the last 10+ years.

Trump is just a self-serving buffoon--he provides the "ignorant" part.. It's the Christian Right who are driving the facist bigotry. You are doing it here in this very thread.

There's a lot more than 2 people killed in boats.

Did you know that the US embassy are also involved. There has been no US diplomat in Venezuela for years and the CIA has been operating within the embassy.

Are you stating that the U.S. is opening an embassy in Venezuela?

This is not an overnight operation and has been going on for some time. The Venezuelan military are cooperating.

What makes you think the Venezuelan military is cooperating?

I think it has been deemed that they will leave the government in tact for the moment as any further disruption or complete taking out of the government is beyond the parameters.

This is to allow the government to do the right thing. If they start doing the same as Maduro and start promoting Narco terrorism against the US then I don't think they will last. But I don't think they dare either.

To do the right thing only for Trump's demands? Trump has made his priority quite clear: "Access to oil!"
As long as he gets it, Trump will support whomever can guarantee that access. From that perspective, the easiest path is to allow the existing regime (and security structure), in place - indefinintely.

No they already have an emabassy and have had for some time. Its just that there was no US ambassador in recent years. So the CIA have been operating the embassy.
What makes you think the Venezuelan military is cooperating?
Just what has been mentioned by key people. But also how smoothly and quick it went that it was not possible within the middle of a military compound without such help or cooperation.

Trump’s authorization of CIA operations in Venezuela was probably also a key factor. It is likely that individuals inside Venezuela played invaluable roles not only in obtaining intelligence, but also in cooperating with key people in Maduro’s military and government to make sure they did – or did not do – certain things at key moments during the Jan. 3 operation.

Why not, hes a business man. If that gets the deal over the line and peace comes then all well and good. But I honestly don't think its just oil. I think Trumps admin genuinely wants Venezuela to have democracy and peace and prosperity from their own oil. Any deals with them on oil will be done as neighbouring nations. Which makes sense.

Theres always some give and take in these relations. Right now all the benefits are going to Narcos, terrorist and the US adversaries like China and Russia. I think it better going to the US who will probably be paying a lot to help Venezuela transition.

..that was my understanding.

A few weeks back, Trump "announced" he was authorizing CIA "covert operations" in Venezuela - I'm sure that public annoucement pleased the CIA operators....

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was reportedly in the dark about the Trump administration’s plan to invade Venezuela and depose President Nicolas Maduro.

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that the White House excluded the nation’s top intelligence from discussions about the planned ouster, which was carried out on Saturday. People familiar with the situation said that Gabbard had previously opposed U.S. intervention in the South American country.

“The move to cut Gabbard out of the meetings was so well-known that some White House aides joked that the acronym of her title, DNI, stood for ‘Do Not Invite,’ according to three of the people,” Bloomberg reported.

Well you know… once a Democrat, always a Democrat and you just can’t go trusting these people. Their religion says they can lie without consequence.

Yes this was the original idea. But marxist ideology has evolved like feminism. In fact its not really any singular idea anymore but amalgermation of several ideas. But some fundementals are similar and thus they naturally come together and morph into new expressions.

In this case marxism and feminism or egalitarianism seem to work together. But primarily its about power differences and oppression. Whether that be about class, race, sex, gender, religion or the many other identities percieved to be oppressed by the establishment. It seems to always be some elite group oppressing the majority or minorities who are disempowered and need freeing from that oppression.

Actually people confuse this with liberal. One is about the principle of the right for humans to be free to live life to the full. The other is being too liberal with laws and policies due to an ideological belief that this is oppressive in the first place.

Loose means being loose with laws and the application of immigration. Not tough and allowing too much leeway.

I know and I wish I never said it now as its side tracking things.

Yes but this does not negate that this opened the door to problems that were not vetted. Or that there were other situations where there was no refugee crisis.

I mean the Right supports a certain level of genuine cases. But its evident that this went beyond that under Left governments. The example of the US is clear. Under Biden 20 million in 4 years. Under Trump around 2.5 the first term and hardly nothing and in fact reverse immigration in this term.

I think the difference is a matter of ideological belief about what immigration should be and represent.

Well all I know when it comes down to it. Loose and open immigration is a Left based position and the Right is usually a tough nationalist position.

Like I said Europe is a strange kettle of fish and sometimes what is called Right is actually Leftist ideology. But also some center right governments support Left leaning ideology when they act within the EU.

Nevertheless this does not change the fact that regardless of which way these nations leaned. Immigration got out of hand and is not causing a national crisis. That Right based ideology is what is toughening up immigration.

Can you see the Dems becoming tough nationalist and kicking out immigrants. Or cracking down on illegals and getting them out. I don't think so. Its radical arm is actually at war with Trump in stopping illegals beiung kicked out. They create sanctuary States for them to hide. It will take a lot for the Left will ever become like the Right on immigration. Even then they do they are taking on a Rights based position. At least in modern times.
@wing2000 has a point, I've participated enough in leading the discussion astray. It is just a pet peeve of mine when talking about Europe as a whole (it's almost never correct, I don't think your use of it was either).

This is insane. Locking out the DNI?

I mean, of course it was wise of them to shut her out. But the whole thing reveals an absurd degree of policy incoherence in the Trump WH.

Unlike the Trump administration, oil companies consider the long-term risks and the oil market to drive their decisions.
ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO Darren Woods delivered these remarks at the White House

I’ll just share a philosophy that ExxonMobil has when we enter countries—because we do business all around the world, in a number of different regimes—we take a very long‑term perspective. The investments that we make span decades and decades. So, we do not go into any opportunity with a short-term mindset.

There's a value proposition that we have to meet. It has to be a win‑win‑win proposition. Obviously, it has to be a win for the company and our shareholders, generating a return for the investments that we make. It has to be a win for the government. The resources are an important source of revenue that help support the people of the places that we do business. And it has to be a win for the people. We have to be wanted there— and to be a good neighbor. And those three things ensure a stable, long‑term platform for the large investments that we make for the long term.

If we look at the legal and commercial constructs—frameworks—in place today in Venezuela, today it’s uninvestable. And so significant changes have to be made to those commercial frameworks, the legal system, there has to be durable investment protections, and there has to be a change to the hydrocarbon laws in the country.

We’re confident that with this Administration and President Trump working hand‑in‑hand with the Venezuelan government that those changes can be put in place. And with respect to the Venezuelan government—that perspective—we don’t have a view on. We haven’t talked to the Venezuelan government, and obviously we have yet to assess the people’s perspective with respect to ExxonMobil entering the country.

With the invitation of the Venezuelan government and with appropriate security guarantees, we are ready to put a team on the ground there. [to assess the current situation]
