  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In which those in the UN rolled their eyes given that speech without realizing one's own hypocrisy.

Frankly, this is the same admin who leveled charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia and are now getting beat down in court. The same admin who couldn't indict a literal ham sandwich. So who knows if what they say about Maduro and drugs is true, hyperbole, or false. So you may want to hold tight. Yes, he was a election stealing strongman. (that sounds familiar) The question becomes is it our duty to intervene with like nations who have the same kind of leaders. You know, like Russia who tortures and kills their dissidents via windows or poisonings? This is no different than Iraq. This is about their natural resource assets.

My justification is just fine. I have family that lived in Venezuela and had to leave because of Maduro’s economic policies and the cartels.
I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm not sure what it has to do with sanctioning an invasion by the United States. Should we poll Americans to find out who has family members affected by authoritarian regimes, and invade all of them too?

No. Saying will we run the country and saying we won't is two entirely different plans.
We didn’t have to with Noriega. I’m not sure what is going to end up happening with Venezuela.
But now that you mention "A ruthless dictator involved with the cartels that distributed drugs to the US" we as in "the Trump admin" doesn't even treat them identical.
How so. Noriega is in prison and Maduro might end up there too.

If you'd like to come by and pay for installing solar on the house this spring (which will save me a lot in the long run), and in exchange you demand that I stop providing free wifi to the other neighbor that's constantly trying to hack you, and use my outbuilding for some free storage... sure, that seems like a reasonable agreement.
Sorry, I won't be just 'coming by'. Me and some friends are going to break in whenever we like. And you don't get to decide anything about what I get to do. If you don't like it then we'll just break a few more things until you agree. We're going to make sure you know who is in charge here and make sure everyone else knows. Because there's a few other houses in the neighbourhood that might get the same treatment.

I am sure we are all in general agreement that Maduro was a corrupt, incompetent tyrant. Do your "real facts" shed any additional light on that?

Yes - he has been on television every day for months addressing it -

And hasn't mentioned it once since the invasion. I heard him plenty for the months leading up to January 3rd.

The criminal charges against Maduro are several years old. The world acknowledged that he is an illegitimate dictator.

President Donald Trump pardoned Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras, on Dec. 1, claiming without evidence that his prosecution had been a “setup” by the Biden administration and that Hernández was targeted because he was president of a country where drug cartels operated.

“If somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesn’t mean you arrest the president and put him in jail for the rest of his life,” Trump said in explaining the pardon.

But Hernández had been found guilty by a jury after a three-week trial. He was sentenced by a U.S. District judge last year to 45 years in prison for using his position to help drug traffickers import more than 400 tons of cocaine into the United States, while accepting bribes to fuel his political career and protecting violent drug cartel leaders from prosecution in return.

Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana asked on X, “Why would we pardon this guy and then go after Maduro for running drugs into the United States? Lock up every drug runner! Don’t understand why he is being pardoned.”

Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts said in a Dec. 1 interview on CNN that the pardon is “completely absurd. It’s totally hypocritical and it just shows that they are completely unserious about actually dealing with narcotraffickers. They’re not addressing the drug problem. And this Honduran president has been proven in a court of law to be responsible for poisoning thousands of Americans and Trump gives him a pardon?”

Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida told CNN that while she supports Trump’s efforts to oust Venezuela’s Maduro, she did not agree with his decision to pardon Hernández. “I would have never done that,” she said. “I would have not taken that action.”

Speaking to reporters on Dec. 2 about the pardon, Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said, “I hate it. It’s a horrible message. … It’s confusing to say on the one hand we should potentially even consider invading Venezuela for drug traffick[ing], and on the other hand let somebody go.”

Not asking for Trump to be removed from the discussion but merely pointing to the hypocrisy as no one whined about the 1989 removal of Noriega. I happen to agree with the removal of Maduro. That’s my opinion take it or leave it.

...since others have chimed in on their memories of 1989.....

In 1989, I was one year removed from leaving the U.S. Army after a 4 year stint. In 1988, I left my duty station in Honduras via Panama....and during my brief stay in Panama, was pulled over by the local police for an alleged traffic violation. It soon become clear the traffic offense was simply a pretext to harass a gringo off-duty soldier. At the time, relations between the outgoing Reagan administration and Noriega were quickly detoriating. The police soon discovered I did not have a Panamian drivers license (as was required for US troops stationed in Panama). As they threatened to take me in to their central station, I switched to Spanish, made some jokes about Honduran driving licenses (or the lack thereof) and noted I was only passing through the country (which was true). With that, they let me go.

By 1989, my recollection is U.S. military personell had been harmed or even killed (see below). At the time, the US had at least two military bases in Panama (Ft Clayton and Howard AFB). Given Noriega's hostilities and the importance of having a reliable partner overseeing the security of the Panamanian Canal, I probably supported George H.W. Bush's efforts to remove Noriega (frankly, I don't recall specifically). I should hope I was opposed to not involving Congress and obtaining their approval - first.

  • Fatal Shooting of 1st Lt. Robert Paz (December 1989): The most serious incident occurred on the night of December 16, 1989. Four unarmed U.S. service members in a private vehicle were stopped at a PDF roadblock near the PDF headquarters in Panama City. When they attempted to flee after being surrounded by a hostile crowd and PDF troops, the PDF opened fire, fatally wounding Marine First Lieutenant Robert Paz. Another service member was wounded.
  • Harassment and Confrontations: Throughout the period, U.S. military leaders in Panama weathered a series of "low-grade crises" and growing military confrontations with Noriega's forces, which included harassment, intimidation, and minor skirmishes.
  • Detainment of U.S. Citizens: In another incident related to the December 1989 shooting, a U.S. Naval officer who witnessed the event, SEAL Lieutenant Adam Curtis, and his wife were detained and reportedly threatened by PDF troops.

I too, fondly remember dealings with the "dingbats" dignity battalions in pre invasion Panama.

How often and how many times does he have to mention it for you to be comfortable? The seal team action (not an invasion) was the day before yesterday - -

Trump pardons narco-terrorists who brag about killing Gringos through his drug trafficking.
Biden wouldn't.
In fact the Biden DOJ was the one who jailed him.
hogwash - Biden talked tough about Venezuela - called for military action for more than 40 years and did NOTHING - Trump is the one that brought it to an end - no war -

You know who is rejoicing - our allies and people who had to live under the dictator - you know who is complaining about it - our enemies

Hmmm......

We went from No Kings to Leave the murderous dictator alone in weeks.

Fentanyl is NOT mentioned in the indictment against Maduro.

Thats should seem odd to you. More than odd.

No - not any more than arresting a drunk drive and not mentioning the kind of alcohol he was drinking.

LOL! I'm glad you put that "and" in there but I don't think you really believe it. I'm not a Democrat myself, but I don't know any who who are not glad to see Maduro gone. People like that give socialism a bad name. Maybe Rodriquez will be better.

Nonsense.

In the indictment he's accused specifically of "cocaine trafficking". Its in there dozens of times.

So I ask you again. Where's the accusation of fentanyl trafficking or production? That was a big deal in the run up to this with the "terrorism" rhetoric: how fentanyl kills x many Americans etc.
