  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I kind of worry that I wouldn't have wanted to become Catholic before V2

I like Jesus' saying about how his yoke is easy and burden light. I was watching a homily from a priest whose parish I attend often, and he insinuated that we no longer have the type of discipline that the Orthodox do when it comes to fasting because of V2, and I did some searching for Pre-V2 practices of the laity and I don't think I could have handled it :sigh:
  • Meat was banned throughout Lent.
  • Dairy products were not allowed.
  • Eggs were restricted.
  • Meal portions were strictly limited.
  • Midnight fast before Communion
  • Fasting on Ember Days
  • Fasting on Vigils before major feasts
I know, I know, some will chide me and say how this was wonderful and how we should all go back to this but does this mean I wasn't meant to be a Catholic if I couldn't have handled Pre-V2 disciplines?

If it makes you feel any better, I do not think I would have converted either. Unless you are born into it… it’s very overwhelming. I’d still be a Protestant. It does not worry me though and it shouldn’t is my opinion.

FWIW I wasn't talking about doctrines, only disciplines, but at least I know I'm not alone :)

I hate it when I disagree with a priest on something, this is not verbatim but he implied how he didn't like how ''easy" Catholicism is after V2 but Jesus did say his yoke was easy, so I don't see a problem here.

I think people should be able to practice their faith as they see fit as long as it is in line with Church teaching. If someone is drawn to pre Vatican 2, worship…fine. If people are more comfortable practicing Vatican 2 worship, fine as well as long as it is faithful to the teachings of the Church. Pope Benedict said there was room for both. I agree. So I don’t worry about such things. I just think it unjust to try to lord it over the faithful when it comes to these of things to be honest.

Oh ok. I wasn't trying to cause problems; I was just worried about my own self.
I didn’t think you were. I was just voicing my own perspective on the state of things. I think VII has had some good fruits in many ways but it’s seems to be a double edged sword.

Yeah - I think my thread was more about an aspect of V2 more than V2 as a whole :)

Yes, that's a bit strict. But I believe I would still convert if I were a Protestant living before V2.
It's a matter of habits, things become easy when they become habits.

You might say education in east Asia is too overwhelming, but youngsters there can still handle it, because they started working hard from a young age, and then became habits.
Youngsters there are good in maths, while youngsters in the West are poor in maths, that's due to difference in habits.
