  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

...I'm amazed that so many Americans are suddenly interested in the Monroe Doctrine and the history of US - Venezuela relations, err correction, the "Donroe Doctrine" as our current leader recently noted.

I do have one question for those who seem to align with Trump's vision of a hemisphere under U.S. control:

Do you think the people of Venezuela will accept the US extracting their natural resources without anything in return?

Without anything in return? What does that mean?

...I know Obama, Biden, Harris and Walz could never accomplish something like this, but that doesn't mean we should stomp our feet because the detested Trump can.

Do you think the Venezuelan people want this?

The right-wing strongman Juan Vicente Gómez, the military dictator who ruled Venezuela from 1908 until his death in 1935, granted concessions that left three foreign oil companies in control of 98 percent of the Venezuelan market.

Creating a real ally includes long-term resource management agreements, where a larger entity can rebuild system capabilities that are more efficient and profitable for employees and businesses. This is not something a nationalist environment is typically capable of. Saying that the Venezuelan people will favor Nationalism is something I think is far-fetched, especially when they never saw a dime of profits since they nationalized.

...What's the problem with a better deal than what they had, and especially with the United States, the ones who helped dispose of the terrible dictator, who everyone suffered under?

I don't understand why anyone thinks it's "smart" to go straight to negativity and sarcasm... That's not actually smart or clever at all. It's actually dumb.

Do you think any successful person behaves that way all the time?

The Venezuelan people certainly remember their history. And it's not correct to say "they never saw a dime of profits since they nationlized." Hugo Chavez spent large amounts of oil revenue on social programs that benefited the poor. He also grossly mismanaged the oil industry by not re-investing in infrastructure etc. And Maduro continued his failed policies.

Will they get a better deal this time around?

Their system needs rebuilding. Only one country is willing to do it all for them. Let's wait and see.

It's all part of Trump's Ukraininan peace plan--so, Russia.
Neither Ukraine nor Russia have anything to offer us. Europe is reacting on fear alone, absent of goals... Typical postmodenism doing it's predicted downward spiral.

...What does anyone expect us to do, put on our superman cape and save the world? Why..? Why when they continue to embrace nihilism, meaninglessness and pessimism?

Do you actually believe that "Ukraine forced Russia to defend itself from naked aggression and an unhinged unpopular leader."? Or did you read it kind of quickly? I think there was a slight hint of sarcasm in @Aryeh Jay post :p
There always is

China accuses US of 'bullying' Venezuela as Trump orders blockade

In a phone call on Wednesday, China's foreign minister Wang Yi told his Venezuelan counterpart, Yvan Gil, that Beijing supported Caracas in defending its sovereignty. [emphasis added]

World reaction to U.S. strikes on Venezuela pours in

The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday that it "calls on the U.S. to ensure the personal safety of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, release them at once, (and) stop toppling the government of Venezuela," according to AFP.

Beijing also depicted the U.S. strike that captured Maduro as a "clear violation of international law."

Early Saturday, China had said it "strongly condemns" the U.S. operation.

The Russian government called for Venezuela to "be guaranteed the right to determine its own destiny without any destructive, let alone military, interference from outside," and backed other calls for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

European nations, including Italy and Belgium, said the safety of their citizens was their top priority, and that they were monitoring the situation.

Spain's Foreign Ministry issued a statement calling for "de-escalation and moderation, and for action to always be taken in accordance with international law and the principles of the U.N. Charter," according to Reuters.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Saturday all countries should "uphold international law" and added that the "U.K. was not involved in any way in this operation." He urged patience in order to "establish the facts."

Netanyahu praises Trump

Pretty bold for a president who's also facing legal trouble.

Trump to meet with Republicans after mixed reactions on Venezuela attack

President Donald Trump will meet with House Republicans in a closed-door meeting at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday morning where the commander in chief will face questions about strikes he authorized against Venezuela over the weekend and the capture of the country’s president.

House Republicans will gather for a policy and strategy forum for an event that is expected to last through much of the day, according to a lawmaker familiar with the plans. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., sent an email to members Saturday afternoon confirming Trump would be in attendance to “kick off the event.”

Those plans [to assume control of the country and its oil] were met with criticism from some members of Trump’s own party, particularly those who have been vocal about not getting involved in foreign conflicts.

“(Bondi) and others legally characterize (the) attack in Venezuela as ‘arrest with military support,’” Rep. Massie wrote in a post on X. “Meanwhile Trump announces he’s taken over the country and will run it until he finds someone suitable to replace him.”

“Added bonus: says American oil companies will get to exploit the oil,” he added.

He sounds so afraid of conflict. Like a coward almost.

And they want Venezuelan oil to themselves. Their opinion is entirely meaningless.

He sounds concerned that a criminal has broken the law. Like an upright citizen with moral clarity.
No laws are broken. Why even entertain the narrative?

They want to pay Venezuelans for Venezuelan oil. Not steal it and sell it to other countries.
Violating our sanctions? You support that?

We should not back nationalist dictators and communist regimes ignoring our sanctions.
