  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Should churches and pastors share politics from the pulpit? History of the Johnson Amendment

I agree with that.

I'm not particularly concerned if the world at large practices adultery or homosexuality, or whatever.

I'm only concerned about what the Lord has commanded compatible with a lifestyle in Christ. I'm concerned with politics only to the extent that it might interfere with my ability to live a life compatible with Christ.

I don't expect the morality of the world to be compatible with the Christian life, nor do I believe it's the mission of the Church to use the sword of Caesar to force unbelievers to behave like believers. That guy over there--I'm not really concerned who he's having sex with, unless he claims to be a member of the Body of Christ.
Do you think the sword of Caesar should be used to force unbelievers to stop stealing and murdering?

Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's

That's up to Caesar, who will define "stealing" and "murdering" in his government.

Caesar's definition is likely to be different from Christ's definition.

And that's exactly why we need to speak about politics from every pulpit--because the bible does, and because Jesus did, and because the prophets did, and because Paul did. And if Christians, who should work to become knowledgeable about what real murder and theft and adultery are, not to mention covetousness and disobedience to parents, enforce truth in the voting booth, because their pastors have helped to educate them, it would make a huge difference in this country, for good and righteousness.

In this nation we the people are Caesar.

The government punishes but the pulpit is supposed to teach the cause and cure. That cause, and even the cure, clashes with the governments of man.

Yes, and that clash necessarily involves Christians speaking out against the poorly behaving government actors, as Jesus, John the Baptist, etc. did. Else there is no clash.

Agreed, but there is no taking sides with or within the institutions of man. We are to be the counter-culture to the world man has made in mankind's own image..

Most of what goes for Christianity today is part of the world system. American Christianity has become an extension of the Republican party. This is a human institution that has coopted Christianity for its own purpose, and Christians seems to be like, "cool."
