  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 8:28-30. NJB
We are well aware that God works with those who love him, those who have been called in accordance with his purpose, and turns everything to their good. He decided beforehand who were the ones destined to be moulded to the pattern of his Son, so that he should be the eldest of many brothers. It was those so destined that he called; those that he called, he justified, and those that he has justified he has brought into glory.

And KJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Which is the better translation? Which gives the truth best? Also considering the NKJV...

I see that part of Romans as conditional. My reasons include Romans 8:26. If it is just the Holy Spirit praying, would there still be such variation in the outcomes of Christians?
v27 - God searches the hearts and know the mind of the Spirit? Seems weird to think (Father) God searches the hearts and mind of the (Holy) Spirit. The human spirit seems far more likely and it is the same Greek word 'pneuma."
Fusing these thoughts together some Pentecostals teach the groanings are the intercession of the saints, some even suggest tongues. Then you take the conclusion that after all this groaning and prayer with the help of the Holy Spirit, that all things work together for good. That without the human element involved in groaning, that the working for good may never come.
I admit that this is not mainstream teaching, but here are some of the varying interpretations. From google ai.

Back to your question the NJB seems wordy, I'd go with the NKJV.

Core Interpretation
Tony Evans / John PiperHoly Spirit: Focus on the Third Person of the Trinity interceding directly with the Father.
Watchman Nee / Witness LeeMingled Spirit: The Holy Spirit and human spirit are so joined that the prayer is an act of both.
Martyn Lloyd-JonesHuman Groaning: The Spirit facilitates a wordless longing within the human heart/spirit.
Kenneth BerdingHuman Spirit: The Spirit searches the believer's own human spirit to find and translate their needs.
