  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Disclaimer: I’m not purporting to prove or disprove these alleged apparitions, nor am I attempting to encourage belief or unbelief in them. The following are only my opinions and everyone is free to think and believe as they choose.

Medjugorje

In May 2004, my sister invited me to go with her to visit Medjugorje for seven days, although I was not a true believer. Our Spiritual Advisor, Father Richard Carey, who was a great proponent of Medjugorje and had been there several times, encouraged us. He had a sincere, childlike love for Our Lady and believed completely that she appeared in the small Croatian village. But Medjugorje never seemed authentic to me and Father and I had many serious rounds of debate on the issue.

We Almost Didn’t Make It

After I listened and then read about how St John of the Cross was asked to discern whether or not
a nun was having visions of the Blessed Mother. His assessment was that she was not having
apparitions and later confessed she did not.

Anyway, St John's words of how to discern if a person is actually having true apparitions
from Heaven, flew against the so-called visions at Medjugorje.

The main thing St John expressed was a transformation of the visionary toward humility and holiness.
In my opinion, this did not happen with the visionaries of Medjugorje.
