  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Really? She has to leave her job because she is pregnant? Wow.
It would seem that if motherhood was indeed closer to heaven, that the logic is that it is better than a job working for someone else. Of course if things are tight and her family needs the support that would not be a luxury. With a family net worth of 7 million, she does not have to work. Sure she is great at her job, but it depends on her priorities. She writes speeches and other stuff too that can be done from home. Plus, as a rising star she will have plenty of opportunities in politics if she likes. It is not that i am sexist, but rather trying to state the obvious.

People can enjoy their careers and cultivate them regardless of bank account or pregnancy. It does not have to be one or the other. Just a weird attitude to have for a pregnant female that feels blessed in her state. God bless her. :)

Sure if you like to work that much, no problem "A press secretary, especially a high-profile one like the White House Press Secretary, works far more than 40 hours weekly, often into evenings and weekends, due to the high-pressure, 24/7 news cycle, handling media requests, drafting statements, and managing crises, though their "official" day might start at 9-to-5. It's a demanding, fast-paced role involving constant media interaction and strategic communication, requiring long, irregular hours."

Why are being so judgmental about her decision? She not rushing out to terminate a pregnancy so she can keep her job. She’s blessed enough to do both.

It just seems shocking to me that a person of wealth would not take a year off or so to care for their newborn. As a male I would do that. Don't you think that is more normal than working long and hard hours? But yes, her life and her choices. I am sure her baby will be well taken care of. I do not see her choice as evil or wrong and maybe I am out of touch but I think that most parents would like some time off if they have more money than they can ever need.

I’m sure she will be able to bring her baby to the job. I’m also sure she will have a leave after the birth. From what she said, this administration is very pro family. I’m sure it’s all been discussed and planned on how things will unfold. Again, good for her. All working mothers should have such options. I’ve never heard of anyone getting a year maternity leave.

AI summary:

No, the White House doesn't have a dedicated, permanent on-site nursery facility for staff's babies
, but it provides enhanced family support like lactation rooms, emergency backup childcare, and priority access to nearby federal daycare centers for employees' children, plus the President's family has private living quarters for their own kids, as seen with past First Families. While there are private nanny services catering to the DC area and specific White House staff needs, a universal, taxpayer-funded White House daycare isn't the current setup, unlike some other federal offices.
What the White House Offers Staff:
  • Increased Lactation Rooms:More spaces for nursing mothers.
  • Emergency Childcare: Backup care for when regular plans fail.
  • Priority Daycare Access: First dibs at facilities like the Commerce Department's nursery.
For the First Family:
  • The White House has private living floors where First Families raise their children, with past presidents' kids growing up there, notes George W Bush White House Archives.
Related Childcare Facilities (Not at the White House):
So, while you won't find a public nursery in the West Wing, support systems exist for staff and the First Family has private space for their children.

She may become less of a rising star if she takes too much time away from her career. It's a problem that many of us face in our 20s and 30s: the childbearing years are also the time when professional careers are launched, and a person can't always recover from too many years of interruption. In my own life, while a few months of maternity leave would've been helpful, I didn't want to take too much time away from my academic career. Ms. Leavitt probably feels similarly.

I assume she enjoys her job and plans to continue climbing the professional ladder. It's possible to value both one's own professional life and the nurturing of one's children. I'm glad Ms. Leavitt gets to continue in her job, and I wish more workplaces were parent-friendly. (I'm totally envious of the House of Representatives Child Care Center described above. Imagine if my workplace had had something like that. Sigh.)

Yes, some companies do discriminate like that. I'm not sure it would apply here though. If Trump does poorly, she will be better off to have left and not returned. But her future in politics is now tied to Trump. She will have choices later, like running for a House seat, though she might have to move out of New Hampshire. I suppose too she could be a cabinet officer if the next GOP President likes her for that. Lots of opportunities though, regardless of what she does with her newborn. She has lots of time to decide her priorities too and may very well change her mind.
