  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am asking that because I was. I'm 38 now and I have gone to Independent Baptist churches all my life. Never missed a Sunday except if I was sick or something like that. My earliest memories are of me being in the nursery at our church.

My mom and dad were both born-again Bible believing Christians. Sadly my dad died in 2022 of intestinal cancer. I have no doubt he is with Jesus right now.

My mom is still alive and she told me she has no desire to remarry. I guess she will just grow old single then. I think the Apostle Paul was also single.

Were you raised Baptist as well?

I was not raised Baptist, but I had close ties with it, and spent some years in Baptist churches. I now attend a Bible Church which is essentially Baptist in doctrine and largely in practice. Sorry for your loss.

Hi tdidymas, may I ask what denomination you were brought up in, then? Or are you non-denominational?
Non-denominational is a denomination. It might be called "miscellaneous." Actually, in my distant past, I was raised in several denominations, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Presbyterian, and Baptist. I currently go to a Bible Church, because the main thrust is on what the Bible actually says (as opposed to traditions or sensational ideas). I called myself Baptist before I started going there. I've come to conclude that the London Baptist Confession (1689) is the best of all the confessions I have read.

No, I wasn't raised a Baptist. I was raised an Anglican (Church of England). I never heard the gospel in the C of E; nobody ever told me that I was a sinner in desperate need of a Saviour. When I did hear the gospel from a school friend in my late teens, by God's grace I believed it. I knew I couldn't continue in my Anglican church, but I knew nothing about churches which preached the bible faithfully. With God's help, I came across a Baptist church, where I soon found that everything they did and taught was based on the bible. I have been a Baptist ever since.

I grew up attending a Southern Baptist church. I am grateful that I learned about salvation and got a foundation for my faith and Christian life there.

However, I think I would have been better off if I had been part of another denomination or a non-denominational church.

When my kids were growing up, I took them to a variety of different denominations and non-denominational churches. If I were still raising my kids now, I would not take them to a Baptist church.

I was raised in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (a Trinitarian sister church to the Mormon church). Still a cult because of all the added scripture, but at least not as totally unchristian as the Mormons. I converted out when I was about 49 when I came here to CF in 2005 and finally heard the pure truth. I spent about 20 years as non-denominational, and started attending an independent Baptist church last year and have applied for membership. So I am really new to being Baptist.

I was born & raised in a mainline denomination. For a time we were part of a 'bad' church. I didn't like it. It didn't even pretend to be Christian. They would only read the same verse or 2 from the Bible & that's it for example. I was dealing w/ hard stuff at school too. So I would read the Bible for myself. I read what it taught. I read about personal sin, Jesus being the once-for-all-time sacrifice, he picks you & doesn't let you go, & more. One thing I also saw when I was reading the Bible, it's always 'they believed & were baptized.' I thought 'all these churches are doing it wrong.' Over time I met Baptists & have become involved in Baptist churches. I believe I got called out of other denominations & got pulled to Baptist.

That sounds all too common, never hearing the Gospel in a 'church.' :(
