  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump declares Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 federal holidays

It's common for presidents to give federal workers the day off on Christmas Eve, depending on where it falls on the calendar.

This year marks the first time that Trump has ordered Dec. 26 to be a federal holiday.

It's a poor excuse for picking the taxpayer's pockets every December 24th through December 26th.

Most Federal employees got 30 plus free days off, because they received their back pay for when the government shut down. No business under financial pressure does that to normal employees. When you are essentially laid off, you collect unemployment until you are called back or find another job. Even funnier is that during the down time the Federal Employee accrued another vacation and sick day for not working. Make them take that day if they want off? Seems very fair to me.

I don't think it's fair to force people out of work and then treat them like they owe you something for it.

This wasn't some vacation. Those people were forced to live without income and with the threat of there not being any backpay hanging over them. That's probably more stressful than actual work.

Very few were forced out of work. Most knew it was a paid extended holiday. The workers do not owe the Federal Government anything, but neither should they expect to get the extra holiday.

And the president threatened not to give them backpay. Why not hold the commander in chief accountable? Why does he always seem to get a free pass?

Lol.

I honestly don't understand why them having off on December 26th is a problem. It's only for this year. Big deal.
In germany the 26th is off always. I think that's a good thing. You get one day for family stuff and one for just relaxing.

Christmas Eve off.. I don't know about that, though. Most people need to do some last minute stuff before the great festivities.

You would complain if he cured cancer
And we should if he were also, at the same time, promoting behaviors that cause cancer. That's what people are pointing out. The hypocrisy. He literally complained about there being too many holidays like just a couple of months ago. Said that people should work more and even floated the idea of eliminating federal holidays. And now he's creating more. It doesn't make any sense on its face until you realize that all of these things he's doing (down grading the legal status of pot, issuing "patriot dividends", tariff relief checks, new holidays, etc.) are not for the good of the country. They are for the good of Trump's poll numbers. It's also interesting that most of the things he's doing are similar to the things that liberals have been proposing for years.

Trump threatens all the time. Federal employees know how it works. You look forward to such time off and save for the occassion. With Trump its extra extra. Probably will happen again.

Precedence. They always have received backpay. The only thing different this time wasw the threat and in a few instances the actual shuttering of some jobs.

Trump threatens all the time.

I suppose that makes it ok then. And he shouldn’t be held accountable for the obnoxious things he says.

And just because he makes threats frequently, that doesn’t mean he’s not going to attempt to do what he says. He has a habit of breaking the law with these things.

Put yourself in the Federal worker’s shoes. Would you bet your family’s finances on the possibility that Trump was kidding? How about his party and supporters hold him accountable instead of attacking the people he is victimizing.

So it is not so much "what they thought" but more what you believe they would have thought? I think that a bit presumptuous given the recent spate of federal job cancellations. I know that would of been on my mind as a government employee.

You would complain if he cured cancer
Is the inverse of this: You would applaud if he spread cancer?

Both are equally stupid things to assert imo.
