  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump administration says sign language services ‘intrude’ on Trump’s ability to control his image

The Trump administration is arguing that requiring real-time American Sign Language interpretation of events like White House press briefings “would severely intrude on the President’s prerogative to control the image he presents to the public,” part of a lawsuit seeking to require the White House to provide the services.
Department of Justice attorneys haven’t elaborated on how doing so might hamper the portrayal President Donald Trump seeks to present to the public. But overturning policies encompassing diversity, equity and inclusion have become a hallmark of his second administration, starting with his very first week back in the White House.
The National Association for the Deaf sued the Trump administration in May, arguing that the cessation of American Sign Language interpretation — which the Biden administration had used regularly — represented “denying hundreds of thousands of deaf Americans meaningful access to the White House’s real-time communications on various issues of national and international import.” The group also sued during Trump’s first administration, seeking ASL interpretation for briefings related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What image is that, Mr. President?

But how will the deaf and hard of hearing be lied to now?
Oh, still to their faces. They just won't be able to actually know what the lie was.

Bush I signed the ADA, Bush II signed an expansion.

The elder Bush said the "shameful walls of exclusion" would "come tumbling down".

Trump only knows how to build shameful walls, it seems.

...which is probably more accurate:

(this one is just a little comic relief)

Translators of all stripes (both ASL and translators from foreign languages) have been busted both leaving things out (which can leave out context), and putting their own personal "interpretive spin" on things that are being said.

Surely, and I mean surely, no Trump supporter could possibly countenance this.
This is definitely the last straw for me. I mean I'm just...I'm just so mad right now!

Closed caption is not more accurate. Quite a lot of cc is computer generated , which is prone to errors. More importantly ASL is their native native language not English text.

In a Times New Roman font, since Calibri is too accessible. Now not only is DEI verboten but also DEIA.

Next, time to eliminate those unsightly ramps and nasty Braille plaques.

It is if an interpreter is putting their own "creative interpretation" on things, or in the case of the instances mentioned in the video, faking it and signing gibberish because they exaggerated their credentials, then CC is going to be more accurate.

That aside...

ASL more efficient for certain visual-spatial concepts

Written English better for technical/statistical/academic content, especially if that material was originally created for English

Puns & wordplay based on English phonetics (which I'm pretty sure is 30% of Trump's vocabulary and rhetorical style) is also particularly difficult to convey.

Obviously not condoning using this rhetorical style, but when Trump's said things like "Killary" to describe his opponent, or referred to covid as "Kung Flu", that could be very difficult for an ASL interpreter to come up with something on the fly to convey it especially if he's in the middle of a press conference and has already started moving on to the next topic.

So your saying that ASL is not a useful language for the deaf because of a few bad interpreters and the inability to explain why Killary is either funny or astute.

I'm not saying that.

To suggest so would be an example reductio ad absurdum.

I'm suggesting that translators/interpreters (of any kind) can skew an underlying sentiment or meaning.

There's a reason why the phrase "lost in translation" was coined and has become a household saying.

That's especially true for statements being made that are heavy on the "play on words" or English phonetics and/or "Rhyming" or "catchy illiteration". (which happens to be a huge part of some peoples' repertoires)

Just as a simple example.

"I used to be a banker, but I lost interest."

"What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear"

Try to translate that to another language and still have it make sense.

If it's any language where the words for "Interest" (being interested in something) and "Interest" (a rate charged for money lending services) are different, that "play on words" officially makes no sense.
