  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

These islands have been ripping us off for decades. President Trump is fixing this trade imbalance, DEI no longer matters so President Trump and his Administration do not care that the inhabitants "Identify" as penguins, they will pay.
It's a blatant attack on woke spheniscidae.

I don't know what those words mean, but I'm tired of these penguins getting rich off of Americans tax dollars.
I was surprised to find that the etymology of the word penguin might be Welsh (I was born in Wales). Some penguins have black bodies but white heads and Welsh for 'white head' is 'pen gwyn'. Which is pronounced exactly the same.

Hmmmm, born in Wales but in Australia. Don't have a seedy criminal past now do you?

Now he's taken the tariff off electronics goods.
It only took the Nintendo Switch complaints to make him buckle!

But this was the backbone President - the tariff king that was going to MAGA by American's making everything again!

I mean - it's like Trump never even saw Ferris Bueller's Day Off!
Even this guy could tell you about tariffs! :D :D;)
Anyone? Anyone?

Jack Daniel's maker says Canada pulling US alcohol off shelves 'worse than tariff'

"I mean, that's worse than a tariff, because it's literally taking your sales away, (and) completely removing our products from the shelves," Whiting said on a post-earnings call.
U.S. alcohol sales are virtually non-existent in large swaths of the country as most premiers hold firm on keeping those products off store shelves.

Brown-Forman, the parent company of major U.S. alcohol brands like Jack Daniel's whisky and Woodford Reserve bourbon, reported in its recent quarterly earnings that sales to Canada have dropped by an eye-popping 62 per cent.

Canadians are taking a big step back from the U.S. — and here's the data to prove it

Travel is cratering, exports are down and consumer habits have been upended

Congratulations to Canada and to Canadians on their reasoned responses to US bullying.

Trump could end all tariffs tomorrow and the effect would be the same. The changes are permanent. Canadian citizens cannot be forced to buy US products. Canadian businesses cannot be forced to export to the US. Canadian citizens cannot be forced to vacation in the US. The changes have been made and are being made.
===========
The only key US import is energy which is almost completely excluded from tariffs and for those energy products that are subject to tariffs, the tariff is only 10%.
===========
Those hurt will be US businesses who used to export goods to Canada, and those Americans that benefitted from Canadian tourism.

Is anyone really surprised that the tariffs are hurting America, given Trump is defying Adam Smith himself!
Let alone decades of Neoliberal economics from the likes of Reagan, the Bushes, etc.

As long as it is stopping the flood of fentanyl and illegals entering the country, I'm all for it.

You're confusing 2 totally different subjects!

But since you brought up 'the war on drugs' - try approaching it from a market perspective.
What drives up the price of something? Scarcity.

Therefore - what does making something criminal do, and policing for this desired stuff?
Drives up the price.

So what does the war on drugs actually do?
Creates an irresistible incentive for the cartels - which have become major illegal 'corporations' in their own right rivalling Walmart, etc.

What to do about drugs?
Use a mental health model as the Europeans do, supply safe injecting rooms or methadone programs or other drug alternatives, and decriminalise it so addicts can approach government services without fear of being reported and end up in jail.
Then over time it turns out social workers can help these people deal with the root cause of their addiction, find housing and a job, and get their lives together.

“Trade wars are good, and easy to win”, I heard it from the foremost authority on the subject.

While there’s no real “conventional-wisdom” regarding Trump’s fiddling with the economy, “will it be good?, will it be bad?”; who knows?, but it’s not like anyone is going to “lose-money”, (well, not anybody that matters).

This might become the Golden Age for hedge-funds?
Who knows!?

Here's what Canadian provinces are doing with all the US liquor they pulled off shelves

At least two provinces say the booze will go to a good cause, promising to sell remaining inventory and donate proceeds to charity.

One province is offloading it to restaurants and bars instead of selling it to the public.

Others have not said what they plan to do with the shelved liquor. That includes Ontario, which has an eye-popping C$80m ($57.7m; £43.3m) worth of US booze stockpiled, some of which will soon expire.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said remaining inventory is being sold so that products don't go to waste. He added that Nova Scotia will not be ordering anymore alcohol from the US once it sells out.

Quebec [will] donate soon-to-expire liquor to charity events and hospitality schools.

US ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra has signalled that the liquor boycott has been an irritant. Speaking to a US crowd in July, he said it is among the reasons why Trump and his team have referred to Canada as "mean and nasty".

Mid-year figures released by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS) show that Canada's boycott has contributed to a decline in sales that is "very troubling", said council president and CEO Chris Swonger. Exports to Canada have dropped by 85% and have also declined to other markets, including the UK and the EU.

This is Trump's choice, and many support the choice.

1) Clearly, there will be lots less exports except for those items personally negotiated by Trump: guns, missiles, tech and agriculture. BTW, even if the Canadian government lifted the bans, the people still wouldn't be buying US goods.

2) Of course, there will also be fewer imports on goods that have tariffs.

3) Trump is driving down tourism, most obviously from Canada, but also from many other countries (consider his wish to have tourists provide lots of personal information, including 5 YEARS of social media history).

4) And finally, Trump is driving down immigration from any country, other than from white Christians who have an acceptable social media history.

TWO OBVIOUS EFFECTS, BOTH ON THE ECONOMY
1) prices will continue to go up because of tariffs.
2) the whitening of America will mean that many more tech and agricultural jobs will continue to go unfilled.

AS AN ASIDE
China (we are down to 10% of their exports), the EU, India and others will be forced to find new markets for their products and become more efficient. Globalism now longer includes the US. Prices will go down for the rest of the world as they increase trade among themselves. Of course, many of their governments will do as Trump wants. They will buy lots of guns, missiles and tech.
