  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm hoping on Elijah. I suspect the HURD has been complete in heaven for a long time, and the Liturgist will be delighted.

No, I’d be annoyed, because its complete enough for my purposes, and there are several other OSes presently incomplete I’d rather use, like Haiku…

The Elijah to come isn’t a man like as the Tishbite or the Baptist. The Elijah to come is to restore all things. To restore means to bring back what is lost. The truth was lost and needs restored. Who is the originator of all truth ? Who is the giver of truth to man ? The truth can only be restored by the one who gave it. The truth was given to the church but over the years deception came and grew to the degree that truth was lost. This is one reason why there are so many churches with different beliefs. The Elijah to come is the Holy Spirit of GOD that is given to the people that GOD adds to HIS church, those HE calls and chooses, not men. All the descriptions given by the prophets, Jesus and the Apostles predict a great falling away from the truth that from the first century until today has greatly increased so that Paul says, “in the LAST DAYS perilous times will come“ , well people they are here, we are living in them now. Elijah is not yet done calling HIS elect . Remember, the true spirit and power of the Tishbite and the Baptist was not those men, it was GOD ALMIGHTY.

I've used Redhat Fedora Linux for some years, and this was typed on a Linux computer.

I'm just a user, with no formal training and until I saw your post i had no idea what GNU HURD was. I'd heard of GNU, but the idea of a computer HURD which may or may not stampede over the finish line before Elijah returns is something I'll have to leave to far more educated IT people like the Liturgist.

If Elijah comes first, GNU HURD will be the least of our worries. Meanwhile what is the Liturgist going to do all day with no computers in heaven?
And no one to debate with!!!

Still using Fedora, but fed up with systemd and Gnome and Wayland

Indeed, but, believe it or not, I actually prefer interesting discussions on the liturgy. Any time someone wishes to get into the weeds with me on exploring the history of the Anaphora of St. James, or St. Mark, or the Twelve Apostles, or help me write festal services for St. Abanoub the Martyr, who is sadly only liturgically commemorated in the Coptic church, being a Coptic youth who received a crown of martyrdom during the DIocletian Persecution, but who absolutely deserves a feast day in the Western, Byzantine and Syriac Rites, and for that matter, a few other translations of saints; also surprisingly, a lot of Eastern Orthodox saints only have Troparia and Kontakia, not full canons or propers for vespers; setting these up is relatively easy since the General Menaion like the Common for different kinds of saints in the Roman Rite provides a template (most liturgical rites have a default form for different types of feast days which can be used in the absence of a dedicated service or used as the basis for composing such a service)

I have been seriously looking at the BSDs. If they had a ‘live’ USB installer I could find I’d have done it already. I’d probably find it more like the old old Red Hat than those systemd junk. Don’t get me started on Gnome. And my oldest grandson is fascinated by xscreensaver, which requires the X windowing system that Fedora is dumping for Wayland. So no xscreensaver for Fedora using Gnome any more. Mate still uses x windows but the writing is on the wall. Mate for now but Fedora is losing me.

Oh well. Linux was my second OS after starting with Finder 4.5 in the old Mac OS. OSX was my third OS and Windows my fourth. I only have a laptop running Windows because of work, often setting it up for remote access. The remote engineers mostly couldn’t figure out how to navigate a desktop that wasn’t Windows 10.

We had Vespers last night at church, something they are doing for the Sundays of Advent. I said I would be there next week. The deacon in charge said “God willing, He may return before then.” I think many of us are awaiting Elijah. It’s not solely an academic interest. Praying we can be faithful until that day.
