  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A federal judge behind a 2014 ruling that deemed Texas’ ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional has ordered the removal of Ten Commandments posters in seven school districts.

U.S. District Judge Orlando L. Garcia on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunctionmandating the removal of Ten Commandments posters from classrooms in Fort Worth, Arlington, McKinney, Frisco, Azle, Rockwall and Mansfield Independent School Districts, which were named in a lawsuit filed by multifaith and nonreligious families in September.

Attorneys with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and Freedom From Religion Foundation filed the suit on behalf of 15 families whose children attend schools in the affected districts.

My opinion on this article:

The push to display the Ten Commandments, while respecting them as a moral foundation, misses the central point of the Christian faith. It would be better to feature the Beatitudes, as these teachings from Jesus Christ of Nazareth truly represent the New Covenant's emphasis on mercy, humility, and the spirit of discipleship.

Matthew 5:3–10
* “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
* Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
* Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
* Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
* Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
* Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
* Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
* Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

I agree. Not to mention, there are different versions of the 10 Commandments.

Thanks for raising this significant issue again.

There's little doubt that the Texas law violates the Supreme Court's 1980 decision specifically banning the posting of the 10 Commandments in public schools. The ACLU, AUSCS, FFRF, and liberal judges opposing the new Texas law are legally justified with their lawsuits and stay orders, however...

I think the 1980 Supreme Court decision, like many others during the past 75 years, was a grave mistake that not only opposes God but also betrays the Founding Fathers' intent of America's freedom of religion. Anyone reading the Congressional comments of the First Amendment drafters and Joseph Story's "Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States" (1833) can appreciate that the liberal Supreme Court Justices overturning America's Christian heritage for secular values has been both shameful and destructive. It has literally undermined the Bible's authority in our culture and degraded the nation's moral values.

I hope this law does move up the ladder to the Supreme Court again, and I pray that the new conservative Justices will overrule the 1980 ban as was done with Roe vs Wade. We need God's hands in the country's affairs, and we need our children being influenced by God, the Bible, and the 10 Commandments rather than secular beliefs that counter the very foundations of the Christian faith.

People need to understand that we have religion in the public schools today - a faith based system of naturalism, materialism, and relativeism. There is no separation of church and state, just a societal choice as to which religion will be supported.

But you can't be blessed and oppose the 10 commandments, can you? You can't sin and be blessed? One has to go with the other, right? Maybe both need displayed. Always half stories and this is how we've lost our way, IMO
