Fannie Mae's (OTCQB:FNMA) ethics and investigations group, who were dismissed from their jobs last month, had been investigating if Trump appointee Bill Pulte had improperly obtained mortgage records of certain Democrats, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to a media report on Tuesday.
The internal watchdog group had received complaints alleging that senior officials had improperly directed staff to access the mortgage documents of James and others, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The investigators at the GSE were looking into who made the orders, whether Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Pulte had the authority to ask for the documents, and whether proper procedures had been followed, they told the WSJ.
The Fannie (OTCQB:FNMA) watchdogs had sent the probe about the James documents to the Inspector General of the FHFA, the agency that oversees Fannie and Freddie Mac (OTCQB:FMCC). The acting inspector general then transmitted the report to the U.S. attorney's office in eastern Virginia, the WSJ said, citing some of the people.
That office, headed by Trump-appointed interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, brought the criminal case, alleging mortgage fraud, against James. One of the people said the acting FHFA inspector general sent the report to the office because it may be, in part, considered material information for James's defense in the case, one of the people said. -via WSJ
