  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No one is trying to fund health care for illegal immigrants.

Really? So far, the only health care plan that Republicans have come up with is the one the Heritage Foundation created, and that plan became the ACA. Since then, they've only had "concepts" of a plan, nothing more. If they had any tangible health care plan, they've been amazingly silent about it.
The Democrats took someone else's idea and mutated it into the maladroit Obamacare system.

Furious Democrats Call for Schumer to Be Replaced After Shutdown Cave

Leftists, including some elected officials, reacted with apoplectic rage Monday after eight Senate Democrats caved to Senate Republicans by agreeing to vote to end the lengthy government shutdown.
And while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer didn’t appear to be directly responsible, as it seemed the eight had negotiated a deal behind his back, the blame for the massive concession was still flowing his way.
“Despite voting against the deal, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is emerging as the top target for not containing the defections,” Axios confirmed, citing the words of a a number of lawmakers.
“Schumer is voting no,” a senior House Democrat told the outlet. “But that doesn’t mean [a] primary [challenge is] not coming.”
IMHO - They are coming apart at the seams because they eat their own.
Eat their own?? A deal was made. Now let's see if the deal holds with the Republicans.
Their reasonable reasons for breaking with the party were to end the government shutdown, citing the pain and disruption it caused, especially for federal workers, the military, food assistance programs like SNAP, and air travel/tourism in their states. They accepted a deal for a guaranteed vote on the ACA tax credits in December, viewing it as the best chance to resume negotiations and alleviate the immediate crisis.

Ill come back to this thread if the Republicans renege on their commitment.

A big fat “L” for the democrats. :tearsofjoy:
That is yet to be seen in the long run.

First, spin is an art in Washington. Propaganda gets believed. Never bet on the truth in that city.

Second, this defection of eight Democratic Party senators COULD POSSIBLY galvanize the ultra-left to clean out the moderate leftists in the Party. And it could actually win elections. AOC for president? It could happen. The pendulum is swinging wilder and wilder. The pendulum part is true even if AOC is not our next president. Watch to see what happens to those eight compromise senators.

Third, the continuing resolution we now have runs out in January. Rinse and repeat. A forty day government shutdown could be followed by an even longer shutdown. I would expect that come January the government will shut down again. I'd bank on it. I'd bank on a long shutdown too.

For illegal immigrants who don’t deserve healthcare is the main thing.
FYI, undocumented immigrants are not eligible to receive ACA. Undocumented immigrants are eligible to receive emergency care under the EMTALA, a Federal law. Would you also deny this kind of care? Thanks for sharing.
Be blessed.

Not all of them are cannibals.
A deal was made.
Yup. Between Schumer and those eight senators.
Now let's see if the deal holds with the Republicans.
Their reasonable reasons for breaking with the party were to end the government shutdown, citing the pain and disruption it caused, especially for federal workers, the military, food assistance programs like SNAP, and air travel/tourism in their states. It only became real in Schumer's mind when the flying public began to have to worry about cancelled flights and cancelled vacations. The SNAP using public got scant attention in comparison. Pity. Some of them needed the food.
Ill come back to this thread if the Republicans renege on their commitment.
They may have a vote but that does not guarantee they will get what they want. I don't see the willingness of either side to compromise. I expect the next round of government shutdown to happen in January, and this time Schumer may not find anyone in his party willing to reopen the government.

You should be celebrating the loss of health care subsidies for people very much need them, like the rest of the Republican party.
If I were of a conspiratorial bent I might apprehend the GOP engineering the American population to be short lived, under educated but hard working.

They really didn't change all that much from the Heritage Foundation plan. Some added regulations like not disallowing preexisting conditions and the like, but the basic framework is the same as when the Heritage Foundation came up with it in 1989, and when the GOP proposed it in 1993.

The eight Senators from the Democratic caucus who voted to open the government made a deal with Senate Republicans and the White House. The key part of the agreement was a promise to hold a mid-December vote on extending Affordable Care Act tax credits, which Democrats had sought.

Those eight Democrat senators made a prior deal (OK, I can't provide verbatim evidence of this) within their own party leadership to be the sacrificial lambs who would vote against the left wing of their party to reopen the government. The left wing would have been happier with a year long shutdown, a general strike, and the occupation of Washington DC forcing the government to fall. Those folks are furious with these eight compromising senators even if they did get an agreement on a mid-December vote on health subsidies.

The Heritage Foundation criticizes the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for increasing health insurance premiums, limiting choices, and making insurance more expensive, particularly in the individual market. They argue that the law's regulations and mandates have caused sticker shock and pushed more Americans onto government-run health programs. Additionally, the Heritage Foundation contends that the ACA restricts market competition by preventing insurance sales across state lines and limiting options like health savings accounts.

Specific criticisms include:
  • Increased costs: The Foundation claims that ACA regulations led to a significant increase in average monthly premiums, which more than doubled in many states between 2013 and 2019.
    • Reduced choice: The ACA is criticized for limiting health plan options and restricting physician networks, despite the creation of insurance exchanges.
    • Government expansion: The Heritage Foundation argues that the ACA has made more Americans dependent on government-run health programs.
    • Stifled competition: The law is seen as preventing the free market from lowering costs through measures like selling insurance across state lines, which is a restriction they say the ACA did not allow.
    • Flawed design: The Foundation believes the ACA's problems are due to its fundamental design, including excessive subsidies, mandates, and rating rules that increase costs. - Google

An unsupported assertion holds no weight but rather, remains merely an opinion. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I don't know why the handful of Democrats voted the way they did. Not like Trump has ever been shown to be trustworthy or honest, or there has been any indication that Republicans will negotiate in good faith.

-- A2SG, but we are where we are....

I'm not talking about the handful of want to be Republican Senators, no, I am referring to the 6,265,888 people who couldn't remember they voted against Trump in 2020. I guess that episode of Matlock or Dancing with the Stars was just too important for them. They deserve everything that their lack of civic duty gives us.

Yep, and the Soviets and Nazi's made a deal to be friends after dividing up Poland. I love deals made under the cover of darkness with ideological "foes".

And then the nazis attacked the Soviets and took all of Poland until the allies beat the nazis and Poland was free (for a little while anyway). Moral of the story is work with others to accomplish a goal which is something that our two parties can’t seem to be able to do. The dems are going further left while the gop keeps going further right.

ah, the nazi card - been a while since that has been pulled out.

Who here believes bipartisanship (Democrats working with Republicans), is similar to the nazi's - good grief!
