  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Discussion 1 was about Eve. This discussion will be about Adam, and at times Eve, because on certain points it was impossible to not to mention her.

I won't be talking about every single thing regarding Adam that is brought up in the book (there is a lot), so I picked certain things.

Before I begin, please remember that this is posted in the Egalitarian forum. If you are interested in participating in this discussion, please read the Statement of Purpose and make sure your post doesn't violate it. There were issues/problems that came up in Discussion 1 and I do not want that to happen again. It resulted in Moderator action. Thank you.

Read Genesis 2 and 3 in your Bible. I will post a link to the NIV translation, but you are welcome to read whichever translation you prefer.

Some points about Adam (and sometimes Eve) mentioned in "God's Word to Women":

  1. Adam and Eve were in one body in the beginning; they were created at the same time but Adam was "formed" first, then Eve (Paragraphs 23, 24, 30)

  2. With the above point in mind, Eve was taken out of Adam's "side" not "rib" (Paragraphs 38, 39, 41, 42, 43)

  3. At one point in time, Adam was free to eat from the Tree of Life, but he chose not to (Paragraph 31)

  4. Adam was given certain responsibilities concerning the Garden of Eden; Adam did not fulfill his responsibilities since Satan entered the Garden (Paragraphs 31, 36, 37, 69)

  5. According to Bushnell and others, Adam's condition of "good" did not last; this problem led to Eve being formed and taken out of the side as a superior help (Paragraphs 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)

What did you think of these points? Agree or disagree? Not sure? Do any of these statements contradict what you have been taught?

Here's my thoughts on what I covered from the book:

  • I have heard that Adam and Eve were in one body before, but it was on Gab and they insisted that it was unbiblical, and the idea came from the Talmud and Satan. But after awhile, I do think what Katharine Bushnell says in her book, it is true, especially when you consider that Eve was taken out of Adam's side.

  • The parts about Adam having freedom to eat from the Tree of Life (before he ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil) and Adam having responsibilities for the Garden of Eden - it's little things like this we miss, and when someone points them out, we have to go back and look.

  • The part about Adam's condition of "good" not lasting - I'm not so sure about this. It's hard to think that Adam was sinning before he ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. And if it is true, why was God so patient with him and helping him? Don't we tend to view God differently?

  • In both Discussion 1 and 2, I think that Bushnell's analysis on Scripture and what Scripture says itself derails Patriarchy. Patriarchy likes to protect Adam and blame everything on Eve, but God is not one sided and will always judge truthfully and accurately.
