  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm assuming you meant light years.

You seem to think God's creation would not reflect His incomprehensible power and majesty. Many of us believe it does. As such, the vast distances across the cosmos simply confirm our creator's awesomeness.

This maybe but I still don't think God placed the sun 93 million miles away - Think about it!

Nope - He set the sun in the firmament/sky/expanse, oh yeah also the moon and the stars. Read all about it!

You obviously don't think about it. You simply dismiss it without any thought at all.

Genesis 1:16-18
Once again you insult us.
We do read and believe Genesis 1 as it was meant to be understood. We've been over this multiple times in several threads yet you post this again as if it has never been explained to you. I hope it is because you have a memory problem and not deliberate because the latter would be decidedly un-christlike.

Someone claimed that Genesis 1 is poetic, is this true ?
There may for all I know be some here who believe Genesis to be poetic, but There re plenty who believe it to be literally true, that God really did create all things by His almighty powers, just as Genesis 1 & 2 tell us, that Adam and Eve were the first human beings, that they disobeyed God's command, and so on. What many of us say (and I think you have agreed) is that Genesis does not mention the earth's shape.

I don't think anyone made that claim about Genesis 1. About the Psalms and parts of Job, definitely.
Genesis 1 is revealing God as our creator and our place within His creation. It isn't about teaching physics or chemistry or biology or geography. Anyone focusing on any of those has missed the point entirely.

I don't understand how, but I think 93,000,000 miles in space is different to 93,000,000 on land.

I was thinking about this the other day. When I am sitting on a bus I can look out of the window and see a plane; sometimes I might ever be able to see the logo on the plane. Yet I doubt that, if I were in that plane and looking out of the window, I would be able to see the UK, Chester and someone sitting on a bus looking out of the window.
So how we see things, is different.

But the book of Job does.
Yet you said in post 587: "There is no verse that specifically states that the earth is flat." Now you say that the Book of Job does. The word "earth" occurs 44 times in Job, and not one of those times says anything about the shape of the earth. The words, "He (God) hangs the earth upon nothing" (Job 26:7) do fit well with a globe earth. I wonder which part of the book of Job you are thinking of that says the earth is flat.

Job 38:14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.

That doesn't prove that the earth is flat. Besides, unless you believe that the sea has literal doors, that the seas burst forth from a literal womb, that the sea is literally dressed in clouds, and has a literal swaddling band, or that death has literal gates and doors, the whole passage is poetic.

How many times do you need to be told that the words AS and LIKE are similes; they are comparing something to something else?
E.g "the clouds were like cotton wool". It doesn't mean that the clouds literally are cotton wool.

Job says that the earth takes shape LIKE clay under a seal - and by the way, seals could be square, rectangular or even star shaped. That doesn't mean that the earth IS clay under a seal - round, or otherwise.
If you believe the first words of that verse are literal, then the rest of it has to be literal too. So how are the features of the earth like those of a garment? How do the buildings, mountains, rivers, seas, waterfalls etc resemble buttons, zips, decorations etc on a garment?

Well sorry but it does mention the shape of the earth.

Well, perhaps you could tell me which of the 44 mentions of earth in Job says that it is a flat disc. As I said, I looked at all 44, and couldn't find one. although I did find a verse that says God hangs the earth upon nothing, which doers fit with the globe earth.

What was that you were saying about poetic language? Does the sea have literal doors, or did it burst out of a womb? Job 38:8?
If verse 8 is not literal, what reason have you got for insisting that verse 14 is?

Oh, I know; it fits your beliefs.
