  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Of course. People will be turning up with sandwiches, hot dogs, sausage rolls, meat pies, croissants...I mean, where will this madness end.

Ah, now. If it's food out of the freezer then all bets are off. Assault with a frozen chicken will get you 3 to 5.

Loin?
No, just above it.

Brings a whole new meaning to 'chuck steak'. It's now a command.

Stolen frozen steaks in a plastic bag upside the head
Odd if he got a black eye. Steak would be the cause and the treatment. Which, in passing, is the same for methanol poisoning. They put you on a drip containing ethanol. The one alcohol is the cause of your problem and the other the cure as it counteracts the other.

Assault was overcharging. They should have just charged him with disorderly conduct. Surely you don’t think it’s okay to throw things at people, even if you don’t like them
The problem is that they are the feds. They don't really have that charge available for a regular DC street. It would be a city charge.

In closing arguments, defense attorney Sabrina Shroff argued that a sandwich could not and did not cause harm.

They employ language to match, staging a high-tension courtroom drama: “He takes the sandwich in his hand, he [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] it back,” a lawyer for the government describes, as if the grinder were a gun. Similarly, in a court filing, the prosecution says the sandwich was thrown at “point-blank range.” Later, the lawyer inquires about the “impact” felt by the alleged victim, Customs and Border Patrol Officer Gregory Lairmore.

“I could feel it through my ballistic vest,” the agent testifies. “The sandwich…exploded all over my uniform. I could smell the onions and the mustard.” As Joseph Conrad’s Kurtz might have testified, “The horror! The horror!”

Yeah I dont know what the assault statute states. It may not have met the elements for that. In my state it would have. If you make physical contact, including throwing stuff or spitting, of an insulting or provoking nature it would be assault. So throwing a sandwich at someone that splatters all over them would be considered insulting and provoking.

But I dont know what other options they would have. I'm sure DC has some statute that would apply to something like that.

People are saying the officer should have ignored it, they totally excuse the person who threw the sandwich. What makes it okay to throw things at people and disrespect them? What would they say if an officer did it to a civilian?

What makes it okay to ... disrespect them?

uh, the constitution?

Nobody has a right to throw things at anybody, but you can get right out of here with that "disrespect" business.

What would they say if an officer did it to a civilian?

Bit different of a situation, don't ya think? One being a random civilian, the other being a uniformed agent of the state.

But to answer your question. I'd say the officer was a jerk and ought to suffer some professional consequences. Criminal consequences seems a bit much.

It’s okay to disrespect someone? Or it’s just okay to disrespect someone who works in law enforcement? Are they not human beings? Do they not deserve to be treated like other human beings?
And since it’s a constitutional right does that make it okay to disrespect people because of their occupation? Because you have a right to do it does that make it acceptable?

In the abstract, sure. But what we are talking about here is performance art.

So disrespect is acceptable? I can disrespect gay, trans people, minorities and immigrants and all that’s acceptable because I’m performing? And I’m not talking about in a stand up comedy routine

Nobody's stopping you from exercising your First Amendment rights. Certainly not the Supreme Court. See Snyder v Phelps (among many many others)

Hence why government employees who got fired for disrespecting Charlie Kirk should generally win their cases.

No, the presence of CPB officers was performance art, not a serious law enforcement activity.

I think its a matter of who. Disrespecting authority is honored in America. That's what had been acknowledged and allowed by the courts. Its an tradition among the citizenry in almost every free state.

However I draw the line at throwing stuff at them. They take a LOT of verbal abuse. But throwing anything should be a crime of some sort. We could probably set a standard of you can throw something no heavier or denser than a singular standard quarter sized cotton ball if you really felt compelled to throw something.

Sounds like congress needs to create a law or upgrade the current federal law.

Just because you have a right to do something, should you?
Don't you think it's better to be respectful of people and not judge the many because of the actions of the few?
