  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

“Most Holy Theotokos, Save Us!” This is the common refrain of the Byzantine liturgy. Ὑπεραγία Θεοτόκε, σῶσον ἡμᾶς. This is the cry of any soul who knows that he is punished justly for his sins and he has no merits by which to plead with the Just Judge. He also knows that the demons are so much more powerful than him. Therefore he cries out to his mother to save him.

Mater Populi Fidelis is a confusing thing. Mostly it seems to recommend we just shut up about Mary. It ‘might’ shed a little positive light on how we understand the ‘co-‘ as in co-mediator. It seems to say, though, that there can be some true things we dare not say because they might be misunderstood. How does this fit on the balance beam between prudence and timidity? Has the teaching about Mary suddenly become something for only the higher level believers? Or is it all just optional now? Or do they hope it will all just go away? I suspect that cardinal Fernandez muddied the waters a bit.

Co in Latin is Cum, and cum means WITH, not equal to.

Mary is not equal to Jesus

But we cannot deny that she was WITH Jesus

Paul says that we are CO-workers in the vineyard with Jesus

Was he saying that we are equal to Jesus?

NO.

It means that we are With Him

When we feed our selves, it goes into the head, and then through the neck

Jesus is the head of the body of Christ

We are the body of Christ, Mary is the neck

The grace comes from God, but through Mary.

Virgo portens, Ora pro nobis!

I agree. So many of our Protestant friends can’t get it through their heads that we do not consider Mary to be God’s equal, a fourth member of the Trinity.

The thought that immediately came to mind when I read this was that when watching war films, men dying in battle frequently call out for their mothers. This apparently is a phenomenon with many dying people, not only soldiers.
