  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Which Schumer admitted to.
Yep! But some people will stay in denial because they really, really want to blame Republicans for what they themselves are doing.

There it is!
I was waiting for something close to justification for not helping poor people.

Glad you didn't disappoint! Right wingers can be predictable for sure.
That's quite an imaginative interpretation of what was actually said.

Are you actually trying to tell me that democrats are not in favor of helping the poor because they want federal workers to go without pay, and are willing to let poor people go hungry if it means having some political leverage? 42 million SNAP recipients would be interested to know. So would 750,000 federal workers. They'll be voting in the mid-terms.
They could easily decide that a surefire way to prevent this from happening again is to put more republicans in the senate.

People seem to be getting wiser that way lately. When Clinton called us deplorables, it backfired. When Hunter Biden's laptop was revealed to be a suppressed story, people realized they'd been duped and wouldn't have voted for Biden had they known. When Biden was clearly deteriorating, they told us he was as "sharp as a tack". When K. Harris was forced upon the people after they voted for biden as their candidate, they either stayed home or voted for Trump. Now the democrats in the Senate vote to shut down the government and keep it shut down, and they expect everyone to believe they're doing the opposite.
Let 'em keep it up! It's working great for us. Not so great for federal employees, but voting Republican in the midterms to get another seven Senate seats for Republicans would eliminate this mess from occurring again.

The Joe Biden fiasco was most likely the last straw for many Democrat voters. That's as bad as it gets when comes to party blunders. Like the worst party blunder in political history.

And now they can add a record length government shutdown to their resume.

Harris is still tossing word salads too, and looks like she may try running for president again. Hooray! LOL!

I have little doubt that she will. Someone who totally bombed out in the primaries, that came close to being the the next POTUS, due to massive Democrat party blundering and covering up. She serves as a constant reminder of that. Stay in the spotlight, Kamala!

Glad you agree.
I see you're unfamiliar with the literary device known as sarcasm, even when visual aids are given to help convey that tone. You may want to do some research into the topic, for your own future reference.

Health care subsidies wouldn't be an issue if Obamacare actually was affordable.
You do realize that the ACA doesn't provide health insurance, right? It provides a marketplace for private insurers (many for-profit insurers), and those private insurers determine the price. You are aware of how that works, right?

But now Democrats are leveraging food subsidies for obamacare band-aids. Nice trade!
Not really, since SNAP benefits can still be provided despite the government shutdown. Republicans have always had the funds available for that.

Whataboutism.

Another whataboutism.

More whataboutisms.
Back on topic.....
Yeah, pointing out that Republicans aren't acting in good faith here is a whataboutism. Good job avoiding responsibility.

-- A2SG, then again, they're only mirroring the party's leader in that....

ok....and the other 3 or 4?

It's funny how you keep trying to shift blame when Republicans, again, have FAR more power in this situation to feed the poor.
And what responsibility do the Democrats bear for not privid8ng enough votes to pass the resolution to keep the government open and SNAP flowing? Any?

I also like that after praising doges work for firing all those govt employees, yall now have an opportunity to perform compassion foe them.

That's so nice for them to get to experience right wing covinience compassion.

Some sure. I can't deny that they COULD just vote yes. I'm pretty sure I've been consistent in saying that both are culpable foe the shut down. But I've also indicated that republicans are the ones who have options to continue snap funding.

It sounds like courts have compelled Trump to provide funding. That's nice. Because he also wants Americans not to suffer, I'm sure he'll sta.....

Oh no wait. Apparently the judge needs to tell him how to do his job.
Trump wants courts to ‘clarify’ how to legally fund SNAP after judges order him to use emergency funds for food stamps

Probably because he doesn't want to.

Let's also remember who authored the current CR:

The Senate version of the CR is S.2882 – Continuing Appropriations and Extensions and Other Matters Act, 2026, introduced on September 18, 2025, by Senator Patty Murray. While Schumer did not sponsor the bill, he played a significant role in advancing it through procedural motions and public support.

Key Details About the Senate CR

  • Sponsor: Senator Patty Murray [D-WA]
  • Introduced: September 18, 2025
  • Purpose: Extend government funding and various programs into FY2026
  • Status: The bill failed to pass the Senate after multiple cloture votes were rejected

Chuck Schumer’s Role

  • Majority Leader Influence: Schumer led efforts to bring the bill to the floor and filed motions to reconsider votes after failed cloture attempts.
  • Supporter, Not Sponsor: He backed the bill publicly and procedurally but was not listed as a formal sponsor or co-sponsor.

They authored it - and then continuously vote against the very bill they authored.

The Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act H.R. 5371 is the current bill being debated in Congress to end the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, not S. 2822.

S. 2822 included funding for ACA extensions, full funding of WIC, SNAP protections, and blocks to Medicaid cuts which is why it failed in the Senate.

Except they aren't. The Republicans voted to keep it open. They did their job.

Trump administration must pay food aid benefits within days, judge says

then....

Trump signals he'll fund SNAP after federal judges ruled the administration must keep sending out benefits despite the shutdown

I am happy to hear this is one court order the Trump admin will not just ignore.
