  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yeah, that's the one. It was amazingly effective even before any of it got built, remained amazingly effective during his presidency but became practically useless when Biden took office. No part of the erected wall was sold off, just the parts lying around.

"Pennie’s on the dollar" - is AI doing your typing from dictation? I use closed captioning all the time (hearing/aural understanding issues) and this seems eerily familiar. Not a criticism, kudos if you're harnessing a useful tool. Just curious because that would explain certain oddities.

US layoffs surged in July to their highest level since the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If this is true it might be time to call out the National Guard.

US hiring plans sink to lowest since 2009 in September as labor market slowdown continues

So far this year, employers planned to add just 204,939 jobs, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. [same org quoted in OP]

So far this year, employers have planned to add 204,939 jobs, compared to 483,590 at this point last year. The last time year-to-date hiring was this sluggish was 2009, when companies recorded 169,385 new hires as the economy was clawing its way out of the Great Recession.

Meanwhile, planned job cuts year to date, at 946,426, were at their highest year-to-date total since 2020, Challenger, Gray & Christmas said

“It’s very likely job cut plans are going to surpass a million for the first time since 2020,” Andy Challenger, senior vice president and labor expert for Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in a statement.

Piffle. As long as it's only the working class, nobody much cares. Certainly Trump doesn't care. He thinks they should still be grateful to him for keeping little boys off little girls' sports teams.

And many voters do vote for Trump because he opposes the crazy ideas of the left; yes, like allowing boys to compete on girls' sports teams.

I care. If the middle class loss job, then they can't afford to live. I think Trump to do so much damage. America will never never recover .As of the Transgender playing in women sports.Women were refusing to do sports. Even the Olympics weren't allowing Transgender to play against the girls.

I posted 3 updates recently on the economy thread concerning Amazon (reducing 600k positions from the warehouse, drivers, etc.); UPS (reduced management and staff by 45k this year); Walmart (announced a 3 year hiring freeze). All of the changes are on account of Ai. Below is an article from 2019 regarding wearable use in the warehouse. You’re training your replacement unknowingly.

Wearables in the warehouse bring privacy concerns to the forefront

From smart watches and glasses to biometric clothing, wearables offer great potential in the supply chain as they enable workers to access information, identify tasks and make their jobs easier and safer.

The benefits make it no surprise that 70% of facilities will adopt wearables in the next five years to help employees increase efficiency, reduce errors and improve performance, according to a recent report by MHI.

But as many of these devices track movement, location and even biometric data, there’s a growing discussion about privacy and how employers should manage and use the information they collect.

“For example, the quantity of steps taken by an employee wearing the wearable device can be monitored and tallied for a task being performed, and this information can be used to determine how the movement of the employee throughout the facility can be modified to improve performance,” stated Walmart’s patent application.

That was 6 years ago, when wearables were the new hotness. I’d be interested to know where things stand now; I suspect they’ve gone the way of VR and AR in that they still have some limited utility but were way overblown because techbros like hype.

The real endgame is just robots with sufficient dexterity that they can pick objects with odd shapes.

Layoffs are the result. That’s why I mentioned it. Companies were forecasting this during the pandemic and displaying their automated systems then including driverless cars. Since you asked for something recent I’ll share a piece I listened to last night.

This type of podcast is one the huge problems in today's society. Anyone can post anything. Yes, many jobs will be eliminated as has been the case as a result of all technological changes at least since 1850. And there were always those that fought automation and change. In UK, they were called the Luddites.
============
For me, I want to see the cures for cancer and other diseases. I want to reduce hospital death due to errors. And, yes, most of the boring desk jobs should be eliminated.
==============================
And yes, this will be a crisis for society because so few young people are doing anything to prepare for jobs in the new world in which we live. So many choose to live at home, play video games, and wait for the world to pay them well.

OF THE TOP OF MY HEAD: SOME JOBS THAT WILL ALWAYS BE IN DEMAND -FOLKS WHO WORK AT ANY OF THESE

electricians
carpenters
plumbers
HVAC and solar panel
tech maintenance folks of all kinds

truck drivers
air traffic controllers

Amazon cutting 14,000 jobs as the retailing giant embraces AI

Amazon on Tuesday said it is cutting 14,000 corporate jobs as the retailing giant relies more on artificial intelligence and moves to lower its wage bill.

Earlier this year, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon's investment in AI tools would allow the company to reduce its human workforce as the business becomes more efficient.

Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology, on Tuesday said in a message shared with workers that the job cuts would allow Amazon "to operate like the world's largest startup."

The person he’s speaking to works in the industry professionally and has written 100 papers on the subject. Where do your credentials stack up in relation to his where Ai is concerned? Several of the industries listed already have disruptions.

Have you forgotten the worker shortage for restaurants and the robots some used in their place as waiters?
There’s an automated delivery service in business now. It‘s a little green wagon. I saw one in my neighborhood this summer.
Children are being instructed by Ai as we speak.
Driverless trucks and cars exists including taxis.

The list you provided isn’t reflective of someone conversant in the topic. Not only in terms of the workforce nor on the investment side. If you were following the latter you’d hear similar remarks. But since you won’t believe him I’ll post others who’ve said the same.

Yuval Noah Harari: Workplace Automation & the "Useless Class"

Elon Musk says Universal Basic Income is “going to be necessary.”

There will be fewer and fewer jobs that a robot cannot do better. I want to be clear. These are not things I wish will happen; these are things I think probably will happen. And if my assessment is correct and they probably will happen, than we have to think about what are we going to do about it? I think some kind of universal basic income is going to be necessary.

The output of goods and services will be extremely high. With automation there will come abundance. Almost everything will get very cheap. I think we’ll end up doing universal basic income. It’s going to be necessary. The much harder challenge is, how are people going to have meaning? A lot of people derive their meaning from their employment. So if there’s no need for your labor, what’s your meaning? Do you feel useless? That’s a much harder problem to deal with.”

Former US Labor Secretary: UBI Inevitable Due to AI

According to Robert Reich, the rise in productivity and loss of jobs as a result of AI will require a universal basic income response. "People have got to have enough money in their pockets to buy all the things that the new economy is capable of producing."

AI Is Replacing Jobs – Basic Income Is the Answer | Mark Carney

Former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor Mark Carney highlights the need for basic income ('social supports') to help workers navigate the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market. "New jobs will be created, but old jobs will be lost... What happens to the people in those jobs - are they ready for the new jobs?"

Amazon is reducing its workforce by 600k. I posted about it earlier. That includes warehouse workers, drivers and management. MBA candidates said recruiting is down significantly. Amazon is the second largest employer in the US.

Walmart announced a 3 year hiring freeze that I posted the other day. They have a fleet of driverless trucks on the ready and plan to automate their warehouse.

Starbucks closed 627 stores worldwide in a three month span and 520 were in the US.

Care to restate your position?
