  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Denying the reality that REpublicans are STOPPING people from getting fed by deflecting to a seperate issue doesn't make Republican government officials innocent.
will you be correcting your post? Evidently the Republicans do not have all the power.

The issue is the Schumer shutdown. Anything else is the deflection.
40 million people not getting food is a "deflection" for conservatives.

Actually yeah. That does sound right.

The Democrats with their government shutdown.
That's incorrect. SNAP benefits can, and always have, continued during a shutdown. The correct answer is Trump and Republican leadership. The Senate majority leader even refused to vote on a proposal to keep SNAP funded brought forward by a Republican senator and 11 Republican co-sponsors.

1) You don't need to be in power to put forward bills (you know that right?). You certainly don't need "all the power".
2) Did they vote in support of the Democrats plan to feed 40million Americans?
No?
Did it happen?
No.

Then they still have the power and they used it to stop food getting distributed.

Do they have the power to end the Schumer shutdown and solve all these hardships - no

Do the Democrats openly admit they are using the shutdown to get what they want? Yes

"all these hardships"? No.
Are they able to get food to 40 million people?
Yes.
But they choose not to.

Well they also want 40million people fed but it seems the Republicans don't.

I guess Republicans are getting what they want too.

Right. And, when the Republicans get everything they want, they will, of course, negotiate on health care subsidies in good faith.
Glad you agree.

It's the only leverage the Democrats have at this point to keep health care subsidies. If the Republicans were willing to negotiate in good faith, this wouldn't be an issue.
Health care subsidies wouldn't be an issue if Obamacare actually was affordable. But now Democrats are leveraging food subsidies for obamacare band-aids. Nice trade!

Also note that the Republicans are putting the country through this because they refuse to negotiate in good faith on health care subsidies. I know they don't want people to remember that, but some of us do.
Whataboutism.

And what are the Republicans doing for them? Remember, they made massive personnel cuts on government workers across the board through DOGE, they didn't seem all that concerned for these people at that point, did they?
Another whataboutism.

Democrats found that Republicans only say things like that when the want others to go along with them. They're out to achieve the goals of Project 2025 and cut personnel and services willy-nilly, with nary a care to the ramifications of those cuts, and impose tariffs that hurt consumers in the end. They didn't care about "we're all in this together" back then, I don't buy that they all of a sudden care so much now.
More whataboutisms.
Back on topic.....

It appears any critique of Republicans is just a "whataboutism" in regards to their past behaviours?

Their "past behaviors" aren't the topic here. Schumer and his shutdown are.

Are they indicative and consistent with their current behaviour?

Trying to keep the government funded? Yes.
Allowing the requirement of 60 votes being needed to do that? Yes.

Contrast that with Schumer and the democrats claiming to care so much about the poor--and now denying funding for their food.

Why don't Republicans make changes to their budget then?
They did in the Big Beautiful Bill. Which was passed in both house and senate and signed into law July 4, 2025

This closure by Chuck Schumer wants 1.5 trillion added to the budget because they said so. It was defeated in the legislature, so they are resorting to strong arming

Well that's some really poor reading.

Or perhaps you just missed several of my posts that discuss that Democrats put forward a solution to fund SNAP and Republicans ignored it?

In any case, it's pretty clear that Republicans are the culprits denying SNAP; that really can't be denied by rational people anymore given the steps they are taking to stop it.

Let's see if Trump listens to the judge insisting on partial funding at least......

There was already a way fund to fund SNAP and the democrats are blocking it. It's called voting Yes to reopen the government. The Democrats continue to lay aside that option and continue to vote no.
Stop trying to complicate what is very simple.

No.
In that scenario, BOTH parties are culpable whatever the cowardly leaders may be telling you.

Stop trying to complicate what is very simple.
LOL!!! What is complicated about that solution? What is too difficult for you to understand?

How about you START addressing the disgusting steps taken by Republicans to stop money going to poor people?
