  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The day before the start of the latest shutdown drama, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared that Republicans were “lying” about the Democrats’ hostage demands to turn the lights back on. No, the left’s spending plan would not pay for health care for illegal immigrants, the New York Democrat said. Doing so would require a change in federal law that bars such a thing, echoed Jeffries’ pals in corporate media.
“Nowhere have Democrats suggested that we’re interested in changing federal law,” he told NBC News for a story under the misleading headline, “GOP misleads with claim that Democrats shut down to give health care to ‘illegal immigrants.’” The story, like a lot of reporting from the corporate media, hasn’t aged well.
Hakeem and his team are lying to the American people. The truth is, hundreds of millions of dollars in direct and indirect spending is going to pick up the tab for the explosion of illegal aliens in this country.

Indeed, the wording in the law the Democrats are demanding be removed was intended to stop taxpayer money ending up paying for health care for illegals.

The moral vacuum is impossible to ignore in this article. Nevertheless, its contents is woefully misleading.

FYI:
The continual Republican rhetoric conflates the legally mandated provision of Emergency Medicaid for undocumented immigrants with the idea of them receiving free, comprehensive, or elective healthcare. By federal law (the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, or EMTALA), hospitals must provide stabilizing emergency care to anyone, regardless of status. This is a limited, reactive service—not full insurance coverage—and Republicans often exaggerate the costs and minimize the emergency nature of this care to imply Democrats are attempting to establish a new, broad entitlement for non-citizens, when the funding issue is generally about whether the federal government should continue reimbursing states for this pre-existing, required emergency treatment.

The 200 million in funding is nothing as the USA spends 4.9 trillion on health care. Historical | CMS
The Federalist does report far more indirect spending on medicaid. I wonder though if this is from the liberal states?
As to the billions spent on education? It would be interesting to know what percentage of illegals actually are In the USA, legal or not for at least 20 years of their working life. Also it is true that Illegals pay billions into social security and medicare and pay more in than they give back.

Too bad the Federalist is not balanced enough to note this.

If we don't make assistance programs for Americans only .... then the programs serve as a magnet for others to migrate into our country illegally or legally. We should encourage people to become American citizens and THEN they can apply for various programs if they. qualify.

Lawmakers watch closely as President Ronald Reagan signs into law on April 7, 1986 an omnibus budget law that included the EMTALA legislation. From near left are Senate Majority Leader Robert Dole (R-Kan.); Rep. Raymond McGrath (R-N.Y.); Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.); Rep. Frank Guarini (D-N.J.); Sen. Russell Long (D-La.); Rep. William Coyne (D-Pa.); and Rep. John Duncan (R-Tenn.).

*****************************************************************

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) 1986

The law's initial intent was to ensure patient access to emergency medical care and to prevent the practice of patient dumping, in which uninsured patients were transferred, solely for financial reasons, from private to public hospitals without consideration of their medical condition or stability for the transfer.hospitals not allowed to refuse to take emergency cases

Although only 4 pages in length and barely noticed at the time, EMTALA has created a storm of controversy over the ensuing 15 years, and it is now considered one of the most comprehensive laws guaranteeing nondiscriminatory access to emergency medical care and thus to the health care system.

..... the statute now potentially applies to virtually all aspects of patient care in the hospital setting. Thus, all physicians on the hospital staff, not just emergency physicians, need to be familiar with its general requirements

The majority of such transfers (from private hospitals) to Cook County Hospital Chicago public hospital) involved patients who were minorities and unemployed. The reason given for the transfer by the sending institution was lack of insurance in 87% of the cases.

Only 6% of the patients had given written informed consent for their transfer.

Medical service patients who were transferred were twice as likely to die as those treated at the transferring hospital, and 24% of the patients were considered to have been transferred in an unstable condition.

It was concluded that this practice was done primarily for financial reasons and that it delayed care and jeopardized the patient's health. This practice was not limited to Chicago but occurred in most large cities with public hospitals.

The ironic twist to this story is that safeguards for indigent patients already existed; however, most were guidelines without the force of law that were being ignored by private hospitals and doctors.

a) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals - “individuals shall be accorded impartial access to treatment or accommodations that are available or medically indicated, regardless of race, creed, sex, nationality, or sources of payment for care”

b) American College of Emergency Physicians - "Although these guidelines are a statement of suggested capability, they are advisory and are not designed to be interpreted as mandatory by legislative, judicial, or regulatory bodies.
Approved by the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians, December 4, 1981 .....

c) The American College of Emergency Physicians -

The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA): what it is and what it means for physicians - PMC
*********************************************************

1) The EMTALA is federal legislation that mandates that first priority for EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS, in both private and public hospitals, is to provide the highest standard of medical care irrespective of race, creed, , ability to pay or nationality!

2) An Emergency Department tasked with delivering medical care has far more pressing demands on their time - determining the nationality/citizenship of the patient, ability to pay and as to whether he/she is currently a legal/illegal immigrant should not be a priority!

3) It should be noted that EMTALA was passed by the Republican majority in Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan!

4) Fast forward 39 years - the Republican majority in Congress passes "The Beautiful Bill Act (2025)" and signed by President Trump!

5) In marked contrast to the EMTALA that mandated emergency medical service irrespective of ability to pay, despite adding $2.4 trillion to the federal debt, "The Big Beautiful Bill Act" cuts $1.2 trillion in subsidies that provide health insurance for the poor!

6) The Congressional Budget Office estimates that these budget cuts will result in 10.8 million Americans losing their healthcare coverage!

7) The New York Times characterized this legislation as "the largest upward transfer of wealth in American history" while Fortune Magazine nicknamed it as "The Reverse Robin Hood Bill" - taking from the poor to give to the rich!
