  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

“Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, because we are members of His body.
“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.” (Ephesians 5:22-33 NASB1995)

When God created woman, he created her to be man’s helper (helpmate), partner, coworker, and companion. So he took a rib from Adam’s side to create the woman. She was to be bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh, and “for this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh” (see Genesis 2:18-25). And this is repeated for us again in Matthew 19:5 and in Ephesians 5:31.

Therefore, the fact that the woman and the man both sinned against God, and God made man to be over the woman in authority, and that she is to be in submission to her husband, it does not change the rest of this. For to “be joined to his wife” and “they shall become one flesh” has to do with the man cleaving to his wife, sticking to her like glue, to bond with her, to become one with her, united together with her in love. They are to be as one person.

And the woman is to submit to her husband in the same way in which she submits herself to the Lord. So that means that she will submit to her husband in all ways which do not compromise morality, righteousness, truth, and obedience to God. She is not to submit to sinning in any way or to doing what is contrary to the biblical will and purpose of God for her life. But she is to value and to give regard to her husband, caring about him and his needs.

And husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her so that he might sanctify her. This is an unselfish love which prefers all that God prefers – all that is holy, righteous, morally pure and upright in the eyes of God. And it considers what is in the best interests of others, what is for their ultimate good. So when we love others with this kind of love we will not deliberately and habitually sin against them.

Husbands are also to love their wives as their own bodies. They are to treat their wives in the same manner as they would want to be treated, provided that it aligns with God’s will, i.e. in a way that is also honoring of and loving toward God. They are to love unselfishly, being willing to make personal sacrifices for the good of their wives. And wives should love their husbands in the same way in unselfish regard for the true needs of their husbands.

What is this "biblical will and purpose of God for her life" to which you refer?
God’s biblical purpose and will for all of our lives, that we deny self, die to sin, submit to God's authority, surrender our lives to him, obey his commands, be his servants and messengers and teachers of the truth of the gospel, go where he sends us, and use the gifts he has given us for the mutual encouragement of the body of Christ.
