  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Speaker Johnson Refuses to Seat Democratic Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva

"Adelita Grijalva won a special election on Sept. 23 for the Arizona seat that was long held by her father, former Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.). But despite decisively winning the seat, she has not yet been sworn in.

The move delays a months-long effort to circumvent House leadership on a bill compelling the Department of Justice to release the so-called Epstein files — with Grijalva being the 218th and final signature needed on the procedural gambit called a discharge petition to force action on the measure. "

Why the delay by Speaker Johnson?

In April, Johnson swiftly seated two Florida Republicans after their special election.

The Government was OPEN in April

It is not now - thanks to Schumer -

Much ado about nothing - again.,

The constituents in her congressional district are without representation. Is that "nothing"?

The Speaker could have seated her the day after the election....as he did in April with newly elected Republican representatives.
Additionally, he can seat her any day....as noted in the linked article:

But even though House members are gone, the chamber has held brief “pro forma” sessions in which the House briefly gavels in and out for Constitutional procedural purposes.

Irrelevant. She was elected on September 23rd, a full week before appropriations expired. Additionally, two weeks earlier, on September 9th, another *Democrat* won a special election by a smaller margin and was sworn in the next day. The House met after the election in September.

...it appears a judge will have to force Johnson to do his job or, as the AZ AG suggest, empower someone else to do it for him.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) filed a lawsuit Tuesday over GOP leaders’ refusal to seat a newly elected Democratic lawmaker.

The suit asks a federal judge in Washington, D.C., to declare Adelita Grijalva a member of the House and allow someone else to administer the oath if Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) won’t do so

Last I heard Johnson will seat her and allow the Epstein files to be released.

But don't worry about Trump! He's just figured out a way to get $230 million for all the new legal bills he'll incur. And because he is a very stable genius, you and I will be paying for them!

Congress isn't affected by appropriation lapses. The only reason the house isn't in session is because Johnson has declined to call it into session.

Then Chuck Schumer should re-open it. Problem solved.

There is no problem - as you were just told.

The appropriations fight does not restrict congress from operating. If it did, theyd never be able to vote to end this shut down. Think about it.

Most Trump people know this really isnt defensible, so theyve wisely steered clear of this thread.
Is it really any worse than everything else they’ve been defending lately?

Heh - - yeah

It is very clear that this is a Schumer shutdown trying to strongarm the government because he can't get what he wants through the proper process.

Right, so what’s he gotten for his efforts? How much have the republicans given up to open up the government?

They do want this government back open, right?
