  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm aware. Again, I don't see the connection between asserting the right to deploy the National Guard anytime, anywhere, and for any reason and deportations. The President has some pretty clear guardrails on when, where, and why he can federalize the National Guard laid out in US law between the Constitution and various subsequent laws and amendments. Claiming that those can be ignored "cuz I said so" is not a good precedent to be setting, even if you agree with the reasons behind this particular case.

Unless, of course, the plan is for one-party rule moving forwards?
NG deployments have been due to Antifa and rioters endangering public servants.

NG deployments have been due to Antifa and rioters endangering public savants.
Right, and how does that translate to plenary authority for the President? Especially given that the President himself is the source for both of those claims.

First it was sandwiches, now it's donuts. Where will it end?!?
Now that crisp fall days are upon us, the protesters could drink hot coffee in front of them in a taunting way, but I suppose that would be regarded as terrorism.

Will people never learn? All this rhetoric is exactly what’s fueling the violence. Lord have mercy.

I hate it when people endanger others with disabilities.

Title 10 of the U.S. Code grants the President authority over the National Guard and provides specific powers for their deployment, particularly within the United States during domestic emergencies established by the Constitution.

Yes - but protestors are not the scale of emergency that this bill talks about - or that Trump is pretending they are.

Portland and Chicago do NOT look like cities from WW2 - Trump's betraying his ignorance and capacity to just lie through his teeth.

They're normal modern cities with a few protestors.

He just doesn't like it when people disagree with him being King - and just kicking people out of the country without due process.

Right.

Which the current situation does not meet.

People don't like the president, and people are exercising their First Amendment right to peacefully assemble in the form of protest. Those two things constitute an emergency. Which is why anyone who exercises their Constitutional rights is a terrorist.

It all depends on what Trump says. He does have plenary authority after all.

Trump and MAGA need to realise that in a democracy, people have a right to disagree.
The 'enemy within' as Trump calls them are citizens distressed at the way ICE are turning up and grabbing people off the street - sometimes grabbing mothers and leaving their teenage daughters behind! (As happened in New York - just google it - it is quite distressing viewing.)

That is appalling behaviour. Many of the arrests are appalling and violent.

And it has the stink of demagoguery - of what sociologists call "Othering" - of Trump pretending to the people that there is a massive crisis - and he's the "strong-man" that's going to solve the crisis!

In reality, immigrants are good for America, commit less crime than American born citizens, and are a net benefit for the economy.

The only reason why deportation is more prolific now is because the Biden administration let so many extra millions enter illegally.

This wasn't a hobby horse of the Clinton or Obama administration, both of which were strong on border security, illegal immigration and deportation.

This mess is a result of new radical left policies that are the real danger. The big threat Trump poses is putting an end to it.

Trump wants to deploy the NG to Chicago to protect ICE.

This is in part his justification, however, he has invoked specific sections of Title 10 to do so. Which leads to the next question of whether factually conditions exist in Chicago to meet the prerequisites of Title 10 to federalize the NG and deploy NG to Chi’Town. A federal district judge referred to a lack of facts supporting Trump’s characterization of what is transpiring in Chicago.

Is there any other realistic reason other than facilitating ICE getting their job of rounding up illegal aliens done?

Considering that that's not one of the conditions that grants the President the authority to federalize the Guard, Trump should probably come up with some other justifications if he wants any hope of the courts allowing him to do it.
