  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The story is pay walled, but I don’t think you need to read it to conclude that this is a monument to modern folly.

In the '90s and early 2000's I augmented my income by building large, liquid cooled gaming computers with hand tuned, over clocked motherboards for people with too much money. I charged them a lot. Or, at least, I felt it was a lot.

I thought I was fleecing people.

I wasn't even in the minor leagues.

I'm not catholic so I hope you don't mind me posting here, but I think the post is general, so I thought maybe I can reply anyway? Correct me if I'm wrong??? But I wanted to reply to your message and ask, is it really fleecing people if someone decides to pay 30,000 dollars to have someone name their baby? I mean, they know up front what they're getting. Summary:

Taylor A. Humphrey
is a professional baby-naming consultant in San Francisco who charges up to $30,000 for her services. Starting with an interest in names on Instagram, she founded her consultancy, "What's in a Baby Name," to assist parents in finding the perfect name for their child.

How the service works

Humphrey offers several tiers of service, with her highest-end packages catering to high-profile and wealthy clients. Her work involves extensive research and can include services like:
  • Detailed questionnaires: Clients answer questions about their personal tastes, values, and family history.
  • Genealogical investigation: Her service may include looking into a family's history to find meaningful names.
  • "Baby name branding": An approach that considers the name's potential public identity, which is especially important for celebrity and public-figure clients.
  • Think tanks: Some high-end packages include group discussions to brainstorm and vet naming options.
Why parents pay for the service

For some parents, especially the wealthy, choosing a name is a high-stakes decision that can feel overwhelming. Reasons for hiring a consultant like Humphrey include:
  • Brand identity: High-profile clients, including celebrities and politicians, consider their child's name as part of their public identity.
  • Preventing name regret: Parents may feel anxious about making a wrong choice and hire a professional for reassurance.
  • Mediating conflict: A consultant can act as a neutral third party to help couples who are unable to agree on a name.
  • Unbiased feedback: Parents can avoid unwanted and unsolicited opinions from friends and family by outsourcing the process.

Thanks for the summary and the link! I think yeah then, at the end of the day you know what you're getting. A name. Granted, she puts in more effort like genealogy investigations and questionnaires, but it's not like she can swindle you out of money by giving you a cheap product. A name is a name at the end of the day. While I think the idea is ludicrous in general to pay out that kind of money just to name a baby, I just don't see how anyone could say they were scammed if they were willing to pay that much for a name.
