Living by faith, not by sight

What do you rely on most in life? Your paycheck? Your savings account? Your job security?

The Bible says, “the just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). But if we’re honest, most of us live by sight. We lean on what we can see — money, possessions, and human security. Yet that’s not faith.

Jesus said in Matthew 6 that those without faith spend their lives worrying about food, clothes, and daily needs. But for His followers, it’s different. He told us not to worry, because our heavenly Father knows what we need. Instead, He commanded us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

That’s radical. And it goes even deeper: Jesus said we can’t serve both God and money. We will either love one and despise the other, or cling to one and reject the other.

So the question every one of us has to face is: between God and money — which do you really trust?


All through Scripture, we see examples of people who lived by faith:

• Abraham left home without a map, trusting only God’s word.
• Noah built an ark before there was any sign of a flood.
• Israel depended on bread from heaven in the wilderness.
• The disciples left jobs, homes, and possessions to follow Jesus.

Again and again, faith meant hearing God, obeying, and trusting Him to provide — even when they couldn’t see how.

That same call is still on us today. The God who called Abraham, Noah, and the disciples is still calling His people to live by faith right now.

Personally, my wife and I have been learning to live by faith for over twenty years combined, and we’ve seen God provide again and again. We also know brothers and sisters who’ve walked this road even longer.

So I want to ask: what does living by faith look like in your life? Have you experienced God’s provision when you stepped out in trust?

We’re living in uncertain times, and I believe more than ever it’s crucial for us as Christians to live by faith if we’re going to stand strong in what’s ahead.

We tithe, and wonder to make it every month. I don’t know what we’d do without money coming in. We pray,
we go to church twice a week. We serve. We don’t love our money but it’s survival. Month to month, not complaining.

God has provided for us. But never pray so we can eat every day. Paul fasted a lot, he was a long way from a clothing ministry at times. Having no Money facilitated his ministry, his witness, his writing. He went without between cities. We live by faith for joy and peace and endurance. We live by faith for life every day. We don’t have to worry about food but to stay in Christ in faith in love. God has provided and does provide everything we need.

But are you guys working? Or free as bird with a fiddle? That would definitely be by faith. Traveling?

Out of curiosity, have you ever heard tithing mentioned in the New Testament

Jesus taught that we can't serve God and money, that we'd love one or the other. (Matthew 6:24) The more we profess a need for money, the more we communicate that IT is the source of our provision, and not the God who owns the cattle on the hills.

To answer your question, yes, my wife and I work. But we work for (i.e. serve) God, and not money. Sometimes our work brings in "income"; sometimes it doesn't. But because serving God (and not money) is our motivation, we are just as happy to do our work when we are being paid for it, as when we are not.
