  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The FBI said on Wednesday it cut ties with the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish group that tracks antisemitism, after conservatives criticized the group for including slain activist Charlie Kirk's organization in a glossary on extremism.

Patel's announcement followed criticism of the ADL by right-wing voices, including billionaire Elon Musk, over its inclusion of Kirk's Turning Point USA in a "Glossary of Extremism and Hate." Kirk was assassinated in September.

After that criticism, the ADL removed the entire glossary from its website. The glossary had said Turning Point USA had a history of "bigoted statements," a charge the group rejects.

ADL's website says it "works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement" in fighting extremism and hate. It also notes the FBI had turned to it for data and research as far back as the 1940s.

ADL documents antisemitism and hate. Its critics say it equates antisemitism with criticism of Israeli policies, including Israel's assault on Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territories.

[One of the other things people on the right were complaining about was the entry on capital C capital I "Christian Identity" which is indeed antisemitic and has nothing to do with identifying as a Christian.]

I'd like to know what statements they found that were "bigoted" but I'm also not liking how they're glorifying Kirk like he's Jesus #2. I read a headline the other day they want to put Kirks face on MONEY.... This is going seriously too overboard.

It's hard to find archived material now that the glossary is gone, but I dug deeper

ADL Backgrounder Turning Point (last edited 2023) [sorry, had to remove the link for language]

  • Since the group’s founding. Kirk has moved further to the right and has promoted numerous conspiracy theories about election fraud and Covid-19 and has demonized the transgender community.
  • Kirk also promotes Christian nationalism: the idea that Christians should dominate the government and other areas of life in the US.
  • TPUSA continues to attract racists to the group. Numerous TPUSA representatives have made bigoted remarks about minority groups and the LGBTQ+ community.
  • White nationalists have attended TPUSA events, even though the group says it rejects white supremacist ideology.
  • Kirk has created a vast platform for extremists and far-right conspiracy theorists, who speak and attend his annual AmericaFest and other events sponsored by TPUSA.

at the end of the article is a long list of statements by TPUSA members or speakers they find objectionable.

Here's one detail from a more general article

New Surge in Support for Replacement Theory Rhetoric (2021)

Charlie Kirk of the far-right student group Turning Point USA said on his show that Texas should “deputize a citizen force and put them on the border” to protect “white demographics in America.” He added that the left is focused on “bringing in voters that they want, and they like, and honestly, diminishing and decreasing white demographics in America.”

And from a PolitiFact look at Turning Point

The Anti-Defamation League does not categorize Turning Point as a hate group, Pitcavage said. "It does have this checkered or spotted history with regard to individual members or local leaders in Turning Point USA making racist or otherwise problematic comments… but it’s not the ideology of the group itself."

Thanks! While some of it is generics like "made bigoted remarks about minority groups..." but doesn't actually state what he said, what they do quote is definitely problematic. No one should be above reproach or correction. Not good that the glossary was deleted and I state again, that the glorification of him is being taken way too far.

I'm glad some people have said that he made them decide to go to church again and other things, but I personally didn't like the point of his arguments which were mostly political. But people are claiming he was "doing the Lord's work" which I find ridiculous. Could God use his arguments for good? Absolutely, but I equate that to the Lords work and not Charlie's.
