  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yes, the Democrats won't vote for a policy they are vehemently opposed to so the Republicans shut down the Government. Whose "fault" is that?

The non voting democrats.

The bill passed the house, got sent to the senate and what happened? The Senate Democrats REFUSED to vote on it, why? Because they wanted to add another trillion dollars in spending and no, not all of it is for healthcare. Some of it is for electric vehicles, DEI projects, and adds a bunch of other legality issues like cutting to border security, removes work requirements for federal aid and other stuff. So you want to talk about "facts", this isn't "simple". Stop making it out to be and just toss around blame against the party that you particularly don't like.
You need to calm down here poster.

I asked a simple question, trying to fish out some FACTS about the situation and you jump on me for some unknown reason!

Do you have a link to support what you're saying here?

You just asked a simple question? You made statements...

Yes but you CANNOT dissolve your governing parties of responsibility and having a conversation around the FACTS of this situation clarify who is contributing what to the current situation.

So it looks like Dems want more spending on Healthcare and REpublicans are refusing that.

Seems pretty simple.

That's not a "simple question". So my response to you was based on your statements which is not questions at all... Hop off that innocent train for a second and trying to make yourself out to be the middle man. If you want to fish out "facts" then don't make a statement as if it was fact like

Is if fanning the flames to make that statement?
Or your previous statements above. You are no longer Switzerland.

First post:
As an outsider...help me understand what kind of power the Dems have in this situation at ALL.

What do "dems and repubs." have to agree on?
I made a statement that led to the question.

1) I make it clear I didn't understand the situation
2) I asked a question.

I'm not trying to be neutral, I'm trying to be informed.

Where did I say anything against anyone specifically and not the other? This whole time I'm saying its BOTH sides that are an issue. Don't put words in my mouth please. Republicans should include democrats in negotiation and democrats shouldn't hold the process hostage. BOTH are an issue and that's where I'm leaving it.
The core issue here is a lack of trust. Democrats feel as though the only way to get even a fraction of what they want is to hold the process hostage, because every other time they've caved on negotiations with the promise that their concerns would be taken up later, that hasn't happened. Right now, Republicans are saying "Pass the short-term funding bill, and we'll negotiate on healthcare during that period." But what happens when those six weeks are up and there still isn't a deal? That's an argument that can be made in perpetuity - just keep kicking the can down the road, promising that you'll negotiate later in exchange for passing the policy that you want now. It didn't work very well for Wimpy, so I don't know why Republicans think it will turn out differently for them.

I've scanned the democrat counter proposal. I couldn't find anything about healthcare for illegals so unless someone is going to include the Clause number, I cannot trust Republican complaints.

The bill they linked is THEIR bill, not the democrats. If you have a link to the democrats specifically, then please post it.

Delauro is a Democrat. Did a Democrat bring the REpublican bill to the floor?

Seems strange.
Ok, so this document is a temporary measure so this wouldn't be the same one that the democrats gave for the entire fiscal year. This CR that you posted only lasts until the end of October of THIS year. So it's not the same thing.

So the argument is (so I understand) that before the end of october, this budget gives 1.5 trillion of spending? In 4 weeks? wow! That would be shocking.

Let me know if you find the clauses that allow the spending that Republicans claim. I saw a couple of things that looked relevant...but I only had a few minutes.

There's two different things going on and I think you're getting confused. So, the addition 1.5 trillion is from the bill that goes for the next year completely. So Republicans are saying the bill they proposed added more spending and added a bunch of different things to it and THAT bill doesn't expire at the end of October. That specific one is for the entire 2026 year. This is why the republicans rejected it.

The bill you posted, is a CR (Continuing Resolution) is a temporary measure that funds congress for a limited amount of time and that one specifically expires October 31st, 2025 of this year. So essentially it's like saying, okay let's agree to this so the government can re-open and we can then again, go back to the arguing and bickering over the 2026 spending bill. A temporary measure (CR) isn't regular "Appropriation Bill" for the whole spending year.

Incorrect. The "$1.5 trillion in new spending" is actually over the next decade, and it's mostly not really "new" - the biggest chunk is tied up in extending health insurance subsidies that were set to expire this year.

Okay, I'm not arguing where the new money is going, I'm saying where the new 1.5 trillion in spending was introduced. Basically, what bill it was introduced ON. Appropriation Bill VS CR bill. But according to this, it was listed on a different CR. So I dunno man...

Edit: Either way, it's not the same CR bill in question that rambot posted.

It's definitely in there - the counterproposal linked in the article I cited is the exact same PDF as the one rambot posted. Starts on page 39.
