The former Republican congressman from North Carolina, who lost a primary amid numerous controversies in 2022, is running again for an open seat in Florida.
Former Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who represented a North Carolina district for two years, is launching a congressional comeback bid in Florida a few years after he lost a primary amid a swirl of politically damaging headlines.
While Cawthorn has not released any public announcement or campaign launch video as of Thursday morning, paperwork filed with the Federal Election Campaign shows he filed to run for the seat being vacated by GOP Rep. Byron Donalds, a deeply Republican district in southwestern Florida that President Donald Trump carried by almost 30 points in 2024.
During his first bid for Congress, his Democratic opponent highlighted a social media post of Cawthorn discussing visiting Adolf Hitler's vacation home. Months later, his campaign website accused a criticof going "to work for non-white males, like Cory Booker, who aims to ruin white males running for office."
[and] a spate of controversies including brushes with the law, leaked videos and his own salacious claims about his congressional colleagues' sexual activity and drug use.
