• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I suffered a slipped disc back in April and the pain still persists now - in September.
I tried taking pain killers - paracetamol and ibuprofen - which helped but I have stopped them as I don't want any side-effects from long-term use.
Recently, I tried some exercises suggested on YouTube which seem to help the pain in my back but not so much my right leg.

To be honest, there has been some progress aince April but I'm nowhere near where I was before this happened.

Has anyone else suffered a slipped disc? Any advice you can give me?

PS. I have been praying for healing all along. The Lord healed me of other things but not this one.

Hello John (@John G.), I agree with @bèlla, you need to be under the regular, ongoing care of a physician since your injury is not healed, and your pain is not going away.

Praying for you!

God bless you!!

p.s. - I've never had a herniated disc, but I have had a pinched nerve that needed to be released in my 6th vertebrae a couple of times (a very painful problem that required a chiropractor and traction to fix .. I gave up on my regular doctor and orthopedic specialist as they could not fix the problem w/o back surgery). I'm not sure if you've considered a chiropractor, or even if you should, but I've read that they are able to fix certain kinds of slipped/herniated discs, so it might be worth looking into (BTW, if ibuprofen is helping you, I doubt that your pain is purely nerve pain, just FYI).

I had one. Painful as all get out, and eventually going down into my leg. I dried painkillers but they didn't help much. The first doctor thought I should wait and see if it got better on it's own. I got physical therapy until the therapist said there was no evidence that it was helping. I got an MRI finally and the surgeon said it could be and should be fixed with surgery. And that's how it was fixed in my case. A day later and no pain. More than a decade now with no issues. Your mileage may vary. Find a surgeon who does back surgeries every day. See what they say. You have waited patiently long enough. Do not ignore the leg pain. That SHOULD scare you into at least talking to a surgeon.

I am a board certified pain specialist and have treated this condition in many patients. The poster that said your mileage may vary is absolutely correct.

Your doctor may have already explained this to you, but a slipped disc is a mechanical injury. There are normally 5 low back vertebrae, and we can imagine them as sandwiches. Squeeze to hard and the peanut butter comes out the sides.
Unfortunately there are nerves there and when the disc causes pressure on the nerve, we can pain, numbness and in extreme cases, weakness.
The worst case, which requires emergency surgery, is when your bottom feels so numb that you will lose control of your bowels and bladder.
If that happens, go to the hospital and get surgery or the loss of function could become permanent.

Ordinarily, surgery should only be used if there is weakness or loss of function. If you have surgery only for pain. The wear and tear will cause the pain to come back in 6 months to two years and you will wonder why you had the surgery.

The three ways to treat slipped disc are physical therapy, steroid injections and surgery

Physical therapy takes time, up to two to four years for maximum benefit, so pain meds are added to help complete the therapy. Pain meds do not treat back pain, they alter your perception of pain so physical therapy can be completed

Physical therapy strengthens the muscles around your spine to keep the individual vertebrae from moving. If the vertebrae move, the disc slips out more and the bones develop arthritis from the constant wear and tear
The best exercises are low impact. Swimming is gentle as it removes some of the effect of gravity. If you want to run, get an eliptical machine so your feet won’t touch the ground. If you run on a treadmill or the street, every time your foot hits the ground, a shock wave goes up your spine that makes the slipped disc worse

One of the overlooked causes of back pain is mechanical strain due to one leg shorter than the other, even as little as 5mm. A simple test is to feel the back of your lower legs. If one is bigger than the other, you may have strain due to mismatched length of legs. If you do, you can have your legs measured and an insole made for one of your shoes, think of it as an alignment. If your legs are the same length the stress will be taken off of your back and the pain improves

If the pain is too much or therapy is taking too long, there are steroid injections to shrink the disc and relieve inflammation, but they don’t take the place of therapy to strengthen your back. If your back muscles are weak, the bones move, which causes arthritis and the disc to slip again

A good exercise for back pain is planking. Lay on your belly, get up on your elbows and tip toes while keeping your back totally straight, not humped. Most can hold that position for 10-30 seconds at first, but if you keep trying and eventually make it to 4 minutes, your back is a maximum strength

Also if your disc is bad, don’t sleep laying flat. Gravity is not your friend, and your discs will fill up with water and push harder on the nerves if you lie flat. You may notice back pain is worse in the morning and gets better as you stand up and move. If that is the case, sleep in a recliner sitting up, and you may notice your mornings are better.

There are other treatments for back pain depending on the cause

Sorry if this explanation is too long, if you have any questions feel free to ask

Hope you feel better

I’ve had the problem for over 30 years after an accident. I’ve tried chiropractors and physical therapy, both give relief for several months. Be careful to get a good chiropractor if you try it. I’ve also tried various forms of exercise. The best for me seems to be a lot of walking when the pain is not too bad. I hope you get better. (Edit) If you take long walks, don't do it on a hard surface.

Good advice. A good chiropractor is one that puts his hands on you and does the manipulations. Chiro means hand practior means movement or manipulation which is based on manual which also means hand.
The chiropractor can move your spine to take pressure off the nerves. You still need strengthening exercises to stabilize the bones and keep them from moving back. If you don’t strengthen your back, the bones keep moving and you get “addicted” to the chiropractor

To me, a bad chiropractor is one that does not manipulate your spine hooks you up to machines and does a lot of clicking to convince you it’s working but it’s just draining your wallet

Chronic pain is a full time job, not just for the doctor, but for the patient as well. It takes work to fix. The work can be frustrating but has to be done

Another overlooked aspect of chronic pain is the role the brain plays. Patients don’t like to hear this because they get offended. They will resist and say my pain is real, it’s not in my head. You think I am crazy. No I don’t. I know you are suffering
Think of your brain as a muscle. What you think about will make that part of your brain stronger. If all you think about is woe is me, I am in pain. You will become sad and in pain all the time, you will hate doctors and medications and say nothing works. If all a person thinks about is pain, the brain gives you pain.
Instead, develop a hobby, read a book, get out in the sun, talk to others, get your mind off the pain and you will see it becomes more manageable.
Scripture even tells you to do this, which convinces me of the truth of God’s existence and the truth of the Catholic faith. We cannot earn salvation but when we are born again, we are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, deny ourselves and mortify the deeds of the flesh.

Philippians 4

6 Be nothing solicitous; but in every thing, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your petitions be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasseth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8 For the rest, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever modest, whatsoever just, whatsoever holy, whatsoever lovely, whatsoever of good fame, if there be any virtue, if any praise of discipline, think on these things. 9 The things which you have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, these do ye, and the God of peace shall be with you.

If all we think about is sin and our inability to overcome it, then we are stuck in sin. If we take our minds off of ourselves and our sin and focus on Christ and His righteousness, He has promised to give us the power to overcome sin. We just have to believe Him

Apocolypse (Revelation) 21

6 And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely. 7 He that shall overcome shall possess these things, and I will be his God; and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, they shall have their portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Paul tells us to not listen to people that say sin is too strong and penance is no good. Prayer focuses our mind on God and penance helps to learn horror of sin. How we think is how we are. It’s true for chronic pain and it is true to our Christian faith. That is why I am Catholic, because the faith trains me in righteousness and does not allow me to give up on my sin. I can overcome by the grace of God.

Romans

1 I BESEECH you therefore, brethren, by the mercy of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing unto God, your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, and the acceptable, and the perfect will of God.

God gives us power to follow Him when we ask. As it says in John 1

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.

Paul warns us to beware those that deny this power.

2 Timothy 3

: 5 Having an appearance indeed of godliness, but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid

In chronic pain, we have to avoid the doom and gloom thinking or else we will be sad and in pain the whole time. If we focus our minds on other things, the pain will get smaller. You may realize oh I was having so much fun, I forgot I was in pain

Jesus calls us to come and walk on the water. We can focus on ourselves and the wind and the waves and we will sink. The wind and the waves are our sin and temptation. If we hang around people that tell us our sin is too strong for us, guess what? Instead of overcoming, we will be overcome by sin.

Life is full of scoffers and nay sayers, both in chronic pain and in Christianity. The Catholic Church gives so many graces in the sacraments and follows the biblical command to train in righteousness, I cannot listen to the scoffers any longer. God loves all His children and He offers His salvation to everyone.

We overcome chronic pain by practice, and we overcome sin in the same way. If you don’t want to believe me, there is nothing I can do for you as a doctor or a Christian.

Sorry for the tangential thoughts, but my 15 yrs of treating chronic pain has taught me so much about my faith

Forgive me and peace be with you

There is nothing to forgive. It was a very uplifting post.

I went to a Russian chiropractor several years ago. I am average size for my generation. He was a giant. My eye level was at his chest, and he was at least three times my weight without fat. He twisted my body into positions I didn’t think possible. It didn’t hurt much, but I didn’t enjoy the experience. My pain went away for about six months, but I decided that the gentle therapists at the local clinic were a better option. They slowly manipulated my spine every day for a week. The manipulation of my spine helped a lot, but the electrical therapy was also useful. The pain also went away for about six months.
