  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Shareholders strike back against Disney over Kimmel kerfuffle

Disney shareholders are demanding answers following the short-lived ousting of Jimmy Kimmel, and alleging that the late-night talk show host’s removal may have amounted to "capitulating to government pressure” — and is a potential violation of their shareholder rights.

'This affair is far from over': Disney shareholders are now revolting over Jimmy Kimmel

“There is a credible basis to suspect that the [Disney] Board and executives may have breached their fiduciary duties of loyalty, care, and good faith by placing improper political or affiliate considerations above the best interests of the Company and its stockholders,” the letter reads, according to the report.
“[We reserve the right to file a lawsuit] in the event that members of the Board or Disney executives did not properly discharge their fiduciary duties.”

In the letter, the group – on behalf of the shareholders – allege that Disney’s stock “suffered significant declines” as a result of Kimmel’s suspension, and point to comments from President Donald Trump as potential proof that the company caved to his administration.

If we google Disney's stock price, we can see that it has only fluctuated within 3 points over the past 5 days, and only 6 points over the past month. Checking it at 6 months, it is actually up 10 points. Hardly lawsuit-worthy.

How much is a point worth?

Oh, so Trump or the FCC didn’t censor anyone or take anyone off the air. Glad that’s been resolved

That made me laugh out loud.

Nothing's changed just because Disney and Sinclair have backed down. Nothing at all. Just because Trump had to bring Garcia back didn't absolve him from sending him to San Salvador in the first place.

Looks like Carr is going to have to front up on his promise to 'do it the hard way'. Stay tuned and watch when absolutely nothing happens.

Which is exactly what should happen.
As long as there's a market for left leaning late night comedy (it's a stretch calling it comedy) then people like Kimmel will be on the air

Trump and Carr threatened to. Glad they didn't go through with it (taco), but we'll see how it pans out for the future.

When they officially take action then I will be worried. Running their mouths doesn't concern me much

Charles Krauthammer said it best.
The right thinks the left is wrong.
The left thinks the right is evil.
I believe he is mistaken as I have seen here that people on the right, particularly the religious right, refer to the left or even just the Democratic Party as evil while that is rarely the case on the other side.

I see it often enough from both sides.

From what I see, though, the Right tends to use the specific term "evil" because they are usually viewing through a religious lens.

The Left tends to use terms like "fascist" by which they certainly mean "evil" (rather than the classic meaning of the term) because they're rather sound scholarly than religious.

But make no mistake about it: Both sides use words that mean "There can never be compromise or reconciliation or treaty with those people."

Dogmatic people also tend to be black and white thinkers.

No, when I use terms like "fascist" I mean authoritarian, not "evil". I reserve "evil" for those who take pleasure in inflicting suffering.

Perhaps, at times.

Perhaps, at times.
There are numerous different kinds of authoritarianisms, many of them on the left, such as Maoism and whatever Pol Pot was practicing.

When I use the term "fascist" (and I usually specify "classical fascist") I specifically mean "fascist" as defined by the fascists themselves in the 1920s and 30s. People "shotgun" the use of "fascist" far too freely, and when they do, their intent is usually to signal "evil" particularly in the context of "no compromise or reconciliation or treaty."

Who would compromise with someone they've designated "evil?" Who would compromise with someone they've designated "fascist?"

Used in that way, it means the same thing.

Those words are not really equivalent.

Being fascist is something people do. And they can stop participating in it. We fight fascist people until they desist.

Being evil goes deeper. Its more baked into ones soul than being fascist. Designating people evil implies theres value in killing them no matter what they happen to be up to, because their nature is bad.

I do agree that they both imply no-compromise tho.

One could be convinced that fascism is correct. I'm sure we could play the Devil's Advocate and actually argue the case for fascism. But yeah, evil is evil whatever ideology you attach it to.

I've just finished The Sicilian by Mario Puzo about post Second World War Sicily. I was a third the way through it before I realised it's a dramatization of actual events and people. It was hard to tell who the good guys were. The bandits, the mafia, the fascists, the socialists, the communists, the Christian Democrats, the police...all were 'evil' at some point.
