  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW! The suit is being brought in the Great State of Florida."

Like those Trump has previously sued the NY Times can afford to settle. But it is important, it does cost them and it puts them on notice about continuing to print libelous information.

Clearly the entire failing rag is just a collection of liberal talking points, slander, and unfounded lies.

Nothing. The lawsuit is 85 pages of rhetoric praising him as being master of the universe without articulating how the paper, the listed reporters, or Penguin defamed him, other than he’s big mad about the book written about how he squandered his family’s fortune. He’s just using the courts to preen and posture again.

Only 3 more years.

Aah, so another one of those cases where he sues for libel or some such and the lawsuit dies as it gets to court because it's a bunch of nonsense.

How very nonspecific and unhelpful. Almost like it's hard to say what the libel's supposed to be...

Correct. The main goal is just to have 85 pages of glorifying Trump on record with a court, possibly read aloud. Probably a second goal to back door intimidate smaller publications and publishers with less resources into not reporting/writing unfavorably about him. Maybe potentially slowing the court demands on his own payout on his fine.

I think we can infer that since Penguin and an author who wrote a book about him, at least part of it has to do with that.

Basically, he wasn’t made rich in business or by being a President, so he’s hoping that he can sue his way into an income.

I got through about 3/4 of it and in the entire first half, the only tangible complaint he made was about how one article and the book portrayed the Apprentice people as "discovering" him, when he was akcshually really really famous already.

Anybody IQ above 85 can read the article and clearly see that they're not talking about discovering him from complete obscurity, but rather remaking his image from something of a has-been (at least in celebrity terms) into a shiny, well-honed tycoon.

In the bottom half, they make some somewhat more concrete complaints about allegations of tax evasion on the part of his father and Donald's cheating in school, but in all of the complaints, their citations make it look like the authors wrote a hit piece, but structured their claims in ways that wouldn't constitute libel. (e.g. rather than outright claiming Trump did 'X', they'd say, "Trump's sister says he did 'X'")

God bless you… I read the first 30 pages and AI summed the rest. I couldn’t do it after they got to the segment about how upset he was about The Apprentice.

I hope the lawyers who wrote it charged a boatload, because it's almost entirely ego-stroking bloviation. It seems obvious that the goal is to generate headlines about "Trump Sues NYT" and not to actually win. By the time he loses the lawsuit (and he will unless they just settle), he'll have already won the PR war, at least as far as his side is concerned.

I wonder if this would qualify for a SLAPP countersuit.

I just read a thing, but haven’t verified how official it is, that they aren’t going to settle because they did nothing wrong and feel like it sets up a standard that smaller publications pay the price for the hardest.

Yeah. It's not their first rodeo with Trump lawsuits. This is #3 since 2020, and the other two were both tossed (with him having to pay legal fees on the more recent one). Think it's safe to say they don't plan on settling.

I believe so as Florida has strong anti-SLAPP laws. I hope they sue back.

Also, because Trump filed as a common citizen and not as president, deposition should be very interesting!

Actually, it doesn't sound like they can afford the amount he's going for.

Per CNN Business:
The lawsuit demands $15 billion in damages, which exceeds the entire market cap of The New York Times Company

So if there was some sort of pre-court settlement offer, it'd have to be significantly less than what he's asking for.

Defamation civil suits typically involve having to clear a pretty high bar.

If he's looking to affect change with regards to how media outlets run, a better use of time and resources would be to reinstitute this:

That would force all media outlets to devote a portion of time to controversial matters, as well as to dedicate some airtime to contrasting views.

Although, that would mean that some of the "Trump-friendly" media would have to extend the same courtesy to their opponents as well.
