  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Social media posts mocking the murder of Charlie Kirk have led to the firing, suspension and public condemnation of several educators nationwide, and the list is expected to grow.

Kirk, who was 31 years old, was fatally shot in the neck Wednesday afternoon during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University in Orem, shortly after a member of the audience asked him about mass shootings by transgender-identifying individuals.

Although most Christian leaders and political figures on both sides of the aisle have mourned his loss and put political differences aside while condemning the assassination, not everyone has had a charitable reaction.

Insensitive and vile reactions to the shooting among prominent media figures have generated headlines and even led to the firing of MSNBC analyst Matthew Dowd.

A lot of workplaces have social media policies. If you go on there posting your real face or your real name and make statements devaluing human life, it's no surprise you get fired. It's disturbing that so many of these people are teachers. I heard a story about a teacher (in Canada, I think) playing the Kirk assassination on a loop for an hour to her class of 10 year olds, saying he deserved it, of course. From what I've seen on the web, there must be millions of these people celebrating a man's murder - clearly there are a lot of psychopaths in this country.

Mocking Charlie Kirk's murder is appalling. I do think teachers should be disciplined, and maybe fired, for doing that. What they should be teaching is empathy for the bereaved and tolerance towards those with whom we may disagree. We may politely debate them but never be violent.

They should also be teaching children how to control their own feelings, when anger is trying to get the better of them, and who to go to for advice and help when other people's views distress them.
