  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

[Sep 25] Six people were injured after a 20-year-old man tossed a backpack that exploded at a security screening area of a courthouse in Santa Maria on Wednesday, authorities said.

The suspect had been due to appear in court Wednesday to face a charge over a firearm violation, Undersheriff Craig Bonner said during a news conference.

Bonner said [Nathaniel] McGuire was at the screening station for the courthouse Wednesday morning when he tossed the bag into the building.

The suspect was wearing body armor under his jacket, Bonner said.

[Sep 27] A 20-year-old man who authorities say set off a bomb in the lobby of a Santa Barbara County courthouse earlier this week was charged with a federal crime Friday. He intended to kill sheriff’s deputies and a superior court judge as part of his attack, according to court documents.

According to prosecutors, McGuire threw the bag and shouted, “Liberty or death.”

Authorities said they were able to catch him as he tried to get into a red Ford Mustang parked outside. As he was being taken away, he yelled the government had taken away his guns and everyone needed to fight and rebel, federal prosecutors said.

Inside McGuire’s Mustang at the courthouse, deputies found ammunition, a flare gun and a box of fireworks, along with a shotgun, rifle, additional ammunition, a device believed to be a bomb and 10 Molotov cocktails, authorities said.

He told FBI agents he intended to gather the guns and the Molotov cocktails from his car and reenter the courthouse to kill a judge, according to court records.

--

[Oct 1] McGuire, 20, and a resident of Santa Maria, was charged with 10 [state] counts, including two counts of attempted murder, use of an explosive device with the intent to murder, use of an explosive device for purposes of terrorizing, use of an explosive device causing injury, multiple counts of arson with use of an accelerant, and possession of loaded firearms.

It is also believed that McGuire committed various arsons around the Santa Maria area in preparation for his attack on the courthouse, according to the complaint.

[Federal charges may also apply.]

And in strange coincidence news.

Los Angeles County courthouse in Torrance evacuated as bomb squad investigates unknown device

The robot punctured the orange bag, and it appeared a small explosion occurred, but there was no damage to the robot.

A Redondo Beach man was arrested Friday in connection with a suspicious bag that was left outside the Torrance courthouse this week, authorities said.

A law enforcement source familiar with the situation told The Times that the package at the Torrance courthouse “for sure was intended to hurt someone.” The source also said that surveillance video captured a man leaving the package along with a note that indicated a desire to cause harm and included claims that the man had “killed before.”

What clicks in these people's brain to make them want to kill and/or injury people? It's like this obsessive behavior, "you took my guns therefore I'm ratcheting it up and I'm using explosives." Whatever happened to "now sit down and think about what you did". Do they truly feel like they are heroes fighting against some evilness? These people truly need some form of psychological help desperately. They need to truly learn to value all life.

Maybe if the trial ever starts, we'll find out. The incident was a year ago, but the defense has asked for more time and the feds didn't object.

Trial for Santa Maria man charged with courthouse bombing set for next year

Nathaniel McGuire, who was 20 at the time of his arrest, has pleaded not guilty to charges of using a weapon of mass destruction, maliciously damaging a building using an explosive, and possessing unregistered destructive devices.

His trial date set for Tuesday in a federal courtroom in Los Angeles was continued after the defense requested additional time to prepare for the trial, according to a U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson, who tells KSBY the agency did not object to the request.

A new trial date has been set for April 7, 2026.

McGuire remains in federal custody.

Sounds a little suspicious to me that some people don't want to prosecute this case because of type of person this guy is ("give me liberty or give me death")

Unless you're going to ban everything that can cause death, then gun control becomes obsolete. Take away guns, then it's replaced with bombs, arson, stabbings, etc. It's moral decay that people should be worried about.

This guy used a bomb, not a gun.

I was thinking earlier. Instead of just banning things that can kill, like...I dunno...pointy sticks and cricket bats and socks full of rocks, why don't we look at things that are really dangerous, like a ton of steel barreling down the road at 80mph, inches from other lumps of motorised death on wheels heading in the other direction and license them and make people take tests on how to use them and do random stops to check if they're under the influence and limit the types that can be driven? Like that idea? Yeah, me too.

And then when we've done that we can look at things that are specifically designed and made to kill people and do something similar.

What do you think?
