Well, let's say you have old paper, and you want to have new paper which is more useful than the old paper was when first created. The old paper does not have to go anywhere. It can be processed with added substances to turn it into new desirable and very usable paper which can do more and better than when it was first created.Where does the old spirit go?
So, how does this work . . . like this . . . for getting a new spirit? What I have with scripture is > first, God joins the old spirit person to Himself >
"But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him." (1 Corinthians 6:17)
This union is almighty, because God is almighty in bringing about this union. And His almighty power has His effect on that spirit . . . changing it to become like the character of God's love. So, in prayer we do well to seek this correction and transformation of ourselves with one another in Jesus.
Every person grows and matures in this . . . because of being in union with God Himself in the character of His love >
"Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world." (1 John 4:17)
So, what has happened is God has joined someone's spirit to Himself,
and now God is ***s~h~a~r~I~n~g*** with that person, spiritually,
so the person becomes how God is in love.
It is like how you can join an electrical wire to a stove burner. At first, the burner is old and cold. But once it is joined to the electrical cord with its very great energy, the energy of the cord can pass into the burner and turn it red hot. The character of the burner is changed by the electrical power; like this, God in us changes our character so we share with Him in how His love is. And this makes us like Jesus who is so pleasing to our Heavenly Father.
So, the old-spirited person trusted in Jesus and then was transformed . . . warmed in God's love with almighty power. So then was when what was old is not so, any longer.
God's grace is the action of God doing this, and then each of us in Jesus can spread this grace to other members of the body of Jesus, ministering how this grace changes our character to be like Jesus so we love like Jesus, while pleasing our Father by being like Jesus.
Now - - - in a human . . . there is stuff that leaves, as God changes the person.
"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment." (in 1 John 4:18)
So . . . while the human's own spirit does not go anywhere . . . the evil spirit of fear and other anti-love things does get sent on its way to where it will spend eternity. There is "the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience," we have in Ephesians 2:2. This spirit of Satan and selfishness is removed by God, with its nasty and negative and naughty drives and wrong ways of reacting > this is what will go to hell - the flaming sewer which burns with fire and brimstone. But the person's spirit stays to be changed by God who burns away the evil stuff while correcting and warming us in His love with almighty power to keep us.
"For our God is a consuming fire." (Hebrews 12:29)
God in us drives out fear . . . burning it away > making Satan and his mean and nasty stuff flee . . . burned from us, even >
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)
"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice." (Ephesians 4:31)
A practical part of this, then, includes how God is the One able to put away anti-love things from us; because He is almighty to get rid of any wrong emotions and feelings and thoughts and imaginations. And while burning away things which are Satanic and cruel, He transforms us and warms us in His love and His way of loving generously and kindly > as our next verse says >
"And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
