  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump plans to make Navarro his senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, he said on Truth Social.

Navarro, who claimed credit for coming up with a plan to overturn the 2020 election results, was convicted of contempt of Congress after ignoring a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee and was sentenced to four months in prison.

[Navarro wrote a book about his plan to encourage Congresscritters to object to state electoral college votes; a plan that was enacted on Jan 6 without success.]

Marc Short, the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, criticized Trump on Thursday for choosing Navarro to shape his economic policies. Navarro was released from federal prison last year after completing a four-month sentence for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack at the Capitol.
“I think it’s not always the best idea to take somebody fresh out of jail and put them in charge of your trade policy, as Peter Navarro is right now. ... I think there’s been a lot of mockery in what a sophomoric formula has actually been put in place here,” Short said on CNN.
Navarro also served as a trade adviser to Trump during his first term in office.

On the other hand, I don't know if trade could be too much more screwed up.

Navarro files appeal to force justice department to vindicate him from subpoena conviction

Intent on vindication after spending four months in prison last year, Donald Trump’s White House trade adviser Peter Navarro asked a federal appeals court on Sunday night to force the justice department to explain why it would not defend his 2022 conviction for defying a January 6 committee subpoena.

["Trump told us to" might look bad.]

[If granted, it would] require the justice department to detail publicly when – if ever – it would charge a presidential adviser who defied a congressional subpoena claiming executive privilege protections.

The public accounting could also prove bruising for the department as it would almost certainly have to confront the appearance that it quietly dropped Navarro’s case this summer only because he again serves as a senior adviser to the president.

“DoJ told the courts my appeal raised no substantial questions, forcing me to surrender and lose four months of freedom. Now the same DoJ attorney of record wants to yank his own brief. You don’t make that pivot unless serious constitutional questions exist,” Navarro said in a statement to the Guardian.
