  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

“You don’t arrest 58-year-old grandmothers,” her husband said. But she passed a bad $25 check ten years ago, so adios! er... Slán leat!

Local grandmother held by ICE over $25 bad check from 10 years ago

Jim, a veteran, and Donna, a full-time health care worker, married about eight years ago. A simple life of faith, family and friends. Jim says she’s the first to help others in times of trouble.

Donna, an Irish citizen, came to the U.S. when she was just 11 years old. She is a legal resident alien, or green card carrier, but not a U.S. citizen.

All was well, Jim says, until July. While in Ireland for a family funeral, on the way back at customs in Chicago, Donna was arrested.

“You don’t arrest 58-year-old grandmothers. It’s just wrong. She hasn’t committed crimes. You just don’t do that,” he said.

[To be fair, she did commit a crime.]

Ten years ago, Donna wrote a bad check, charging documents say, for $25. She was a single mom.

She paid it back and got probation. But Jim says the U.S. government is suddenly arguing that was a crime of moral turpitude.

[She was moved from Missouri to a county jail in Kentucky, where she's cooled her heels the past 30 days.]

There is one less full-time health care worker paying taxes. How low can we go? We might be creating some jobs in jails, but if you take a million immigrants out of the workforce, you will have overall job losses. Sorry but as economists say there is no free lunch. We all are going to have to pay, though not as much as this women already has.

What a crock. This person is not a criminal and is here legally. So much for deporting only hardened, illegal immigrant criminals.

Passing bad checks is illegal and a gateway crime to human trafficking and murder.

Really? I passed a bad check once when I was younger and it was the bank’s fault not mine. Am I now a hardened criminal?

You have a larger chance of becoming one as well as your bank.

Don’t drink the kool aid. My bank can also become a criminal? lol

“This report examines recidivism risk for three plausible first offender groupings consistent with historical Commission definitions of possible first offenders. The three first offender groups all come from offenders with zero criminal history points, and are defined as follows:

  • group A contains offenders with no prior arrests;
  • group B contains offenders with prior arrests, but no prior convictions; and
  • group C contains offenders with only prior convictions that are to never count towards criminal history.

Download the PDF

Key Findings

Based on the Commission's analysis the following observations were made:
  • Among these groups the lowest recidivism rate is for group A with a rate of 6.8 percent. Group B has a recidivism rate of 17.2 percent. Group C has a recidivism rate of 8.8 percent.
  • While group B offenders have no prior convictions, it appears that the absence of prior convictions is often due to prosecutorial declinations, arrests that were pending prosecution at the time of sentencing for the instant offense, or arrests with issued outstanding warrants. Moreover, group B, with its recidivism rate of 17.2 percent, has a substantially greater risk for future offending compared to groups A and C.
  • Group C offenders, having been previously convicted of minor traffic or public order crimes, have only limited contact with the criminal justice system prior to their instant offense. Also, with a recidivism rate of 8.8 percent, the overwhelming majority of group C offenders – almost nine out of ten – are not likely to recidivate.
  • From both culpability and recidivism risk perspectives, group A offenders, with no prior arrests, most strongly meet the conceptual definition of the first offender category. Offenders in group A have had no recorded contact with the criminal justice system prior to their instant federal offense. Moreover, as indicated by their extremely low recidivism rate of 6.8 percent, they are easily the most empirically identifiable group of guideline federal offenders who are the least likely to re-offend.”

Well, hey, at least they're getting white people now, too. Sounds like ICE finally came around on the whole DEI thing.

You can't trust any Irish IMO.

Irish and Italian both begin with "I", the same as illegal.

In the default font here, the 'l' in "liberal" and the 'I' in "Illegal" are identical, so extra double checkmate.
I almost added that in there, but decided it was too much of a stretch lol
