I think it's great AND TOTALLY NORMAL that the doj changed the standard for being a temporary immigration judge just a week or two ago.

Just in time for this, totally normal announcement that follows policy.

I was gonna suggest teaching those judges to work construction instead since the industry is so dire.

Yes, I see that new judges now do not need immigration law experience. Sort of like having a dermatologist perform heart surgery. Some might do fine, others not so great. I can remember when my state who votes on local judges, instituted a requirement that they actually are a lawyer. That yes, there were times in some states in the USA where that was not required even until the 1990s. Where it might hurt though is if the judge is incompetent then I assume that appeals can be made?

When the goal is to remove the undesirable, you just have to make it look somewhat legit.

An excellent use of resources!
" Any lawyer" with only two weeks of immigration training can now be an immigration judge? Though drawing from military and federal employees, soon enough it will be open to anyone say...an ambulance chaser? This is truly the beginning of corrupting the judiciary process not to mention those seeking a fair trial.

They should be happy that they are getting a trial before they are found guilty.

Yes, firing 60+ immigration judges and a bunch of other immigration court personnel and then reassigning military judges with no experience in immigration matters is an excellent use of resources.

Though that would jive with your side's fawning over DOGE's incompetence and fallacious claims of efficiency gains.

The idea that a foreigner can step across the borderline and suddenly be awarded a trial seems silly to me. Just scoot them back across the border and tell them not to come back. There are legal ways to come here. Just do it the right way.
What is harder? An application for citizenship or confinement and a trial?

Yeah, it's wild how rights map onto jurisdictional boundaries.

"But officer, I was doing 55 and you pulled me over in a 55mph zone."
"Yeah, but you were pretty close to the 35mph zone, so, the 55 signs don't really count."

Just scoot them back across the border and tell them not to come back. There are legal ways to come here. Just do it the right way.

Perhaps you should do some research into how asylum claims, particularly affirmative claims, are made.

If they are caught right there crossing the border, they can indeed be scooted back across without trial.

[Maria is right that people that claim asylum can be heard.]

Asylum seekers? An asylum seeker is a person who has left their home country and is seeking protection from persecution in another country, but who has not yet been legally recognized as a refugee.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 47.8 million immigrants live in the United States as of 2023. This figure includes individuals with legal permanent status, temporary visas, and unauthorized immigrants.
There are an estimated 14 million illegal immigrants in the US.
According to the Pew Research Center, as of 2023, there were only 2.6 million asylum applicants among the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population.
Separately, the number of asylum applications filed in fiscal year 2024 was a record high of 892,904. As of January 2025, there were over 3.7 million open removal cases in U.S. immigration courts, with nearly 1.5 million asylum cases pending.
The vast majority of illegal immigrants are not asylum seekers. Of those who actually make asylum applications, court records show only 35.8% are granted.

Plus 500?
If we lose 100 qualified judges, and add 600 unqualified military lawyers, there will be a net gain of 500 butts in seats.

I think it means we dropped 100 but then picked up 600 for a net 500 judges.

As opposed to keeping the 100 existing judges and hiring more immigration judges.

500 judges, that aren't trained in the field. That Trump put them in. I'm not sure why he would fire the 100 immigrants judges. I'm guessing they weren't willing to break laws for Trump. Eventually people, that breaks the law for Trump, will be punished.

None of Trump's appointees are breaking the laws.
