At least 54 people shot, 7 fatally, during Labor Day weekend in Chicago

Labor Day weekend was marked by gun violence in Chicago, with at least 54 people shot and seven people killed across the city as of Monday night.
Violence prevention groups called for more support from the community as President Donald Trump threatened to deploy the National Guard to address the violence. Despite the president's insistence, Mayor Brandon Johnson has released data showing crime is down year over year.
In one recent incident, a call for a large disturbance near South Cottage Grove Avenue and East 35th Street in Bronzeville ended with at least five people shot early Monday morning. A 17-year-old boy was among the victims, and a person of interest was in custody.

I can't find where the mayor of Chicago has ever said "the city is safe and needs no help." Do you have a source for this statement? If not, you should change the title of the thread.

I was able to find this statement from the mayor of Chicago though:

"From my first day in office, public safety has been my top priority. In just two years we have made historic progress, driving down homicides by more than 30% and reducing shootings by almost 40% in the last year alone. Last week, we learned that President Trump cut another $158 million in funding for violence prevention programs in cities like Chicago. These cuts are on top of the Trump administration dismantling the Office of Gun Violence Prevention and terminating more than $800 million in grants for anti-violence programs across the country.

If President Trump wants to help make Chicago safer, he can start by releasing the funds for anti-violence programs that have been critical to our work to drive down crime and violence. Sending in the national guard would only serve to destabilize our city and undermine our public safety efforts." --
Mayor Brandon Johnson

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has made it clear he does not want federal intervention in the city, particularly in response to President Donald Trump's proposal to deploy the National Guard to address crime.
Here’s what’s happening:

Mayor Johnson’s Stance
• Johnson signed an executive order stating that Chicago police will not assist federal agents with immigration enforcement or military-style operations.
• He declared, “No federal troops in the city of Chicago. No militarized force in the city of Chicago” during a Labor Day protest.
• He emphasized protecting the humanity and rights of Chicago residents and maintaining local control over law enforcement.
oh and if 54 people shot, seven murdered in one weekend is not a sign of needing help - how many have to die before it is?

Lol! Talk about a mayor who hates Trump more than he cares about his own city.

Our leaders abandoned Chicago. Trump is right: It's time to call in the Guard

The South Side of Chicago is a war zone. In 2023, the city recorded 617 homicides and more than 2,000 shootings, with neighborhoods like Englewood and Woodlawn hit the hardest.
Just a few weeks ago, I stood over the body of a man who had been shot dead. Hundreds of young souls will be killed by year’s end.
So I was not surprised when President Donald Trump said, "Chicago's a mess. You have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent. And we'll straighten that one out probably next." After all, the government’s first responsibility is to protect its citizens. When endless violence continues to plague the lives of people around me, action is needed.

There is no quote saying they don't need help, either.
The word 'safe' only appears in the headline.

The governor was joined by Mayor Johnson, who insisted that Chicagoans do not want a “military occupation” and that the city is being unfairly targeted. Both leaders argued that what Chicago truly needs is “investment,” not federal intervention.

Saying he doesn't want nationalized federal troops in his city is not the same as saying he doesn't need help.

Trump has been cutting all sorts of emergency management and security funds from state and local governments. Maybe instead of cutting those grants, he could increase them if he wanted to help. State and local governments are better able to assess and address needs, rather than some centralized federal authority, setting aside the use of federalized military assets for law enforcement.

I never said it was a verbatim quote -
It is nowhere near synonymous.

I never said it was a verbatim quote -
White kid shoots up a school full of white children and the left are outraged. But when black kids shoot up other black kids, the left does nothing.

When can we expect action from the GOP to prevent school shootings?
When Trump shows up with the national guard because the DNC has done nothing but contribute to the mental health crisis by confusing children and allowing the government and social media to raise them.

As opposed to the right who do....um, what does the right do in these cases, exactly?

Trump sent the national guard to stop black kids from shooting up other black kids. Yet the left opposes him every step of the way and complain about Trump not doing anything? Priceless.
