Earlier today, during the opening Mass at Annunciation Catholic school in Minneapolis, a 23 year old man shot numerous children and adults before killing himself. Among those killed was an 8 year old and a 10 year old. Three adults and fourteen children were then taken to the local trauma center, some in critical condition.

What is the role of a priest and nun in such situations? Let’s consider biological parents before we look at spiritual fatherhood and motherhood. When a child is hurt, it is the job of a mother to comfort her children. However, a father is called to both comfort his children and to guide them on how to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

As a spiritual father, my article here is not to finger-point, but rather to warn that tragedies like today’s shooting can somewhat (not entirely) be avoided by teaching the true Catholic faith. As you will soon read, the shooter and his mother were baptized Catholics at the very parish where the shooting took place.

The angst in this priest's words - and heart - is painfully refreshing to hear. Yes, far too many priests in the Western Churches today are panderers for parish and worldly applause, while ignoring their obligations before God whose praise they ought to thirst for. What a horrid contradiction has descended upon us! The unthinkable has come among us like a plague from hell, "standing in the Holy Place", having seated themselves in the Judgment Chair of Jesus, dressed like lambs but mouthing words like the dragon.

I'm so very sorry the Church has accepted and now promulgates the title "father" to most of her leaders. This holy Reality has been robbed of its potent focus given by God. The perfect prayer, given us by Jesus, the "Our Father," has become nearly meaningless, if not impotent. It is rattled off and raced through like a paper-thin poem from antiquity. In the dimension of the spirit there are only two fathers, which Jesus made clear:
1) The Father in Heaven. "Call no man on earth your father!" What part of that is unclear? "You have one Father, who is in heaven". And,
"you are all brethren." (Mt 23:8)
And then there is:
2) The father of lies and liars.
Jn 8:43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
Jn 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Jn 8:45 But, because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

If God's people were faithful to this truth, perhaps more could and would hear the immense treasure of saving holy wisdom there is, in this prayer, the Our Father! Clericalism among priest and bishops - and in the laity - would be weakened, and the potency of humility could be more easily embraced. Most of all, the truth that God IS my Father would be no longer obscured by the living contradiction of it (that is, the many wolves in sheep's clothing who are indiscriminately called "Father" in rote obedience to a small -"t" - tradition. In this we fall to the patterns of the past: "You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men." (Mk 7:8)
