"We're very satisfied with the charges," he said during a news conference with the family's attorneys. "More importantly, we want peace. We do not want any type of uproar. We do not want any type of disturbance, we want peaceful protests, that's what the family wants. That's what the community wants."

Hopefully the family's statement prior to the video being released will prevent some of the negative outcomes we've seen in the past with regards to protests going off the rails.

Protests over injustices have a decidedly “unanticipated” quality to them.

I am surprised with how quickly this case has progressed I am not sure if this means the act was truly more egregious then other officer homicides or if perhaps the lesson have been learned and police are no longer going to close ranks regardless to protect their own.

The overhead camera gives a pretty clear view of what happened. The five police officers delivered an excessively brutal beating. Then everybody stood around for a half hour, including a couple paramedics, while Nichols sat injured on the ground. I don't see any way for the five cops to beat the charges.

One of the three former police officers arrested last year in the beating death of a Black motorist was found guilty of civil rights abuses, while two other officers were found guilty of witness tamperingThursday in federal court.

The jurors deliberated for more than five hours before they convicted Demetrius Haley of excessive force resulting in injury, deliberate indifference resulting in injury, conspiracy to witness tamper and witness tampering. Tadarrius Bean and Justin Smith were also found guilty of witness tampering for not being truthful in the aftermath of the beating of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, but were acquitted of the other charges.

The men still face second-degree murder charges in state court.

Two of the five officers involved in the beating — Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr. — reached plea agreements before trial and testified against their former colleagues.

Officers convicted in Tyre Nichols case will get new trial

It comes after lawyers argued the original trial judge was biased against them

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley and Justin Smith were found guilty in October 2024 on federal charges of obstruction of justice through witness tampering in the case. [the above]

The men still face second-degree murder charges in state court.

In a separate state trial, Bean, Haley and Smith were acquitted of second-degree murder for the fatal beating.
